I just paid $600 bucks for 4 Cerwin Vega Speakers (3way for the back....2way 5" for the front), and a pioneer turner/cd player. My question is this. I have a 68 coupe rs. and I need to know the best place to put the front speakers? If I put them in the door, it looks like I would have to drill a couple wholes for the speaker wires. If I drill underneath by the vents, thats kinda too permanent isnt it? Any ideas?

The only option for a speaker that size is the door. The kick panel will only support a 4x6. The Infinity Kappa 4x6 plate will fit in the stock location but the depth is tight. The kick panel location is full of door hinges and supporting structure so a sawzall is out. One way I've seen wires run is to remove the kick panel and put a small notch on the vertical frame that the thin kick panel trim covers. Remove just enough so that the wire will go through with just a little panel flex. That way in the future the kick panel will cover your work. The only way out of the door is to drill a hole, but it will be well hidden.

Thanks Carl, your reply came just in time, im taking her over tomorrow night to a friend of mine who is a stereo tech. We're gonna put our heads together and make this work. Another concern if you want to reply is getting the pioneer with the cd to fit correctly into the stereo area after its been cut. He says we may need a "Volvo Kit" but I saw how cheap they looked and said no way. He says my heater linkage might get in the way. Its a stereo where im going to have to cut the area to take away the "stereo knob" holes. I will take notes to let you know what I do. Any ideas in the meantime...heck shoot...i need em.

I have a changer in mine, but I run a Kenwood knob-type head unit. This is the only knob-type radio/tape/changer I could find. The Kenwood unit is $150 and will drive any Kenwood changer given the correct adapter. I refused to use a DIN unit because once you cut it there's no going back. Also, as you mentioned, it's difficult to get it to look right since the dash is slanted. For me, it just did not suit the car.

I installed my CD player in the glove box, fabricated a new glove box out of plexiglass, left the original radio in for the stock look. the stereo back rests on the heater box.

This is just food for thought guys but there is a guy down here in Dallas that takes STOCK AM or AM/FM camaro radios and replaces the insides of them with current radio innerds. What you wind up with is a radio that looks EXACTLY like a stock radio but has 88 watts of amfm stereo with a 8 cd-Changer (optional). It's kinda of pricey at around $400.00 for the radio conversion and another 350.00 for the CD (you supply him with the am or am/fm radio core) but the sound is awesome!! The CD is controlled via a remote. You can get more info at radiomantexas.com (http://radiomantexas.com) .

The cerwing 5" are going to fit with a little room to spare in the door. Which is where I prefered because door panels are cheaper and more available if I or any subsequent owner wanted to change back. The 6x9's of course are going to slide right in.

The stereo looks like a fit. Im taking it very slowly on this one. Because like everyone says, once you cut, you can never go back on this part. However, because of advancements in sound since 1968 lol, I am drawn into this thing to have a nice modern stereo where the stereo should go. If I have to cut and modify a little here or there to make it look good, I think I'll do it. I am heeding all advice though. Speakers are tomorrow, stereo the day after.

You must have awful small magnets on your 5" speakers you are putting in the door panels? I have 4" Rockford Fosgate Punch speakers in the kickpanels (20oz magnets barely fit), with separate Kenwood bugeye tweeters mounted just above them in the kickpanels (with crossovers behind). Then I have 6x9 Polk Audios under my well liner and these are all run off a 200watt Precision power amp. Then I built a triangular ported box with two Soundstream SS-8" subwoofers powered by a separate Rockford Fosgate 150watt amp. The crossover level tuning box is mounted in my glove box. Since all off these have separate fused power and use the RCA output from the CD player, I still had the normal speaker out wires from the back of the CD unused. So, I changed out the factory dash speaker with the dual 3"ers from D&R and run them off the CD deck (they can't handle more than 60watts). This way I can use the fader control in the deck to blend the level of the dash speakers and the rest of the car speakers. It's a maze of wiring when you think about it, but it is an awesome moving boom-box. One thing is for sure, I must rely on the tach to make my shifts when enjoying tunes, because I certainly can't hear the engine during casual driving....and my voltage regulator is working overtime.

You can fit a 6 1/2 in the door if you place it right. In my previous life I had 6 1/2 Infinity Kappas in there.
