View Full Version : Covan '69 Dash question - re: Air vent...
craigon Feb 4th, 04, 05:21 PM I have a question for anyone out there with a Covan 69 Camaro dash. How does your driver side Air vent fit? Mine is really loose (jiggles up/down and sideways way too much). I was wondering if anyone had to do any modifications to that area to get the vent to fit tight. I may be missing parts, as my project started back in 2000 as a basket case with a gutted interior and dash parts.
DRJDVM Feb 6th, 04, 08:47 AM Craig... I'm using a Covan dash too and mine was the same way..... on the stock dash there are small pieces of felt the pivots sit in/on...... even whe I transferred them over from the stock dash to the Covan, it was still loose.... so you're probably missing these small felt pieces ot they are just too thin to take up the gap between the pivot on the vent and the "cradle" on the dash piece.
So what I ended up doing is using 2 rubber grommets (like for passing a wire through a firewall etc). The ones I picked were slightly loose when I put them over the pivots on the vent piece. Once I put everything together and snugged it down, the vent was tight but not too tight to turn etc. It's loose enough to turn but not loose enough that it will turn without my help.I figured if its too tight I can lube it with some silicone etc...
That worked for me........
I thought about cutting some more small felt pieces etc, but I tried the grommets and they worked so I used them instead.
craigon Feb 6th, 04, 09:04 AM That’s a great idea, thanks! Like you said, I noticed that the gap that the pivot sits in was bigger in the Covan. I posted the this same question an PT.com and got some good responses on what I was missing, including pics. But the Grommet idea, is a new one. Thanks.
Greg O Feb 9th, 04, 09:28 AM I was going to start a topic about the Corvan stuff but saw this one.
How long did it take you to install it from start to finish? What words of wisdom would you give to someone considering installing one of these?
Thanks!
craigon Feb 9th, 04, 09:59 AM I suspect your question is for DRVDVM, as I’m just putting mine together for something to do while it’s too cold to play in the garage (for me anyway). I won’t be at the stage to install it for some time. Also, go over to the “Interior” forum on www.pro-touring.com (http://www.pro-touring.com) and look for my recent thread on this same topic to find another person who has installed the dash (he’s probably over on this board too).

Unreal Feb 9th, 04, 12:07 PM I used thick felt with a self adhesive on the back. I found it at Home Depot, and it was un a blister pack for sticking on the bottom of furniture. You can get round or triangular. I went with the triangular, and cut strips of the necessary length and width.
DRJDVM Feb 9th, 04, 02:03 PM My install was a little different..... I'm using the Nova dash in my '69 Camaro..... by doing this, it allows me to run 5 inch speedo and tach.... its kind of like a "cheap version" of the DSE piece.... it fits but its not the same as the Camaro one, so its not a "bolt in"... I had to fab some small mounting brackets at the top and it doesnt cover some of the mounting hole on the pass. side..... I havent install the dash pad yet, so I can't comment on how everything fits together, but I've been told it should work just fine.... we'll see.....
I had Covan cut the holes for me, since I wanted to make sure everything was symmetrical etc ( I was scared of screwing it up)..... I had to located and drill holes for the turn signals after I mounted all the guages etc.....
I'd like to post pix here, but I'm not sure how.....
JamesD Feb 11th, 04, 02:04 PM DRJDVM i'd love to see your dash, email the pics and i will get them on here.

was that little hole on the right side the only fitment problem? btw your car looks GREAT!!
DRJDVM Feb 13th, 04, 01:08 PM Thanks for doing that James..
The mounting holes are different at the top, so I had to make small brackets out of flat metal to relocate the holes to secure the dash at the top. Rather than drill new holes in the plastic, I just attached metal brackets to the metal dash and drilled holes in that, so they matched the holes in the Covan dash. Alittle bending here and there to get everything to line up. The holes on the bottom/underside had to be slotted alittle too. Overall pretty easy to do. I'm not much of a fabricator and it took me about 2-3 hours once I came up with a plan on how to do it....
