I bought a 69 several years ago and the console plastic between the ashtray and the compartment was cut out, a section about 3/4" by 3". I've gone to several car flea markets in hopes of finding another one, but the nice ones have the same area cut out. Does anybody know why this was done. The only reason I can come up with was to use the ashtray hole as a cup holder. Any thoughts on this. I'm trying to avoid spending $160+ for a new one. Thanks in advance.

Isn't that where the seat belt bracket goes???

Are you sure that it has been cut out ? I had one that was broken in that area & have seen a lot of others with damage in the same place. I beleive it was just a weak spot. I lucked up & found my replacement at a swap meet for $25.00. The only advice I can give is keep looking or buy from a catalog. Good luck !

Yes... that's the area that the seatbelt buckles are stored in. There was also a metal bracket inside it that the buckles slipped onto, it just held the buckles. I've never seen a replacement for any part of the console other than the trim pieces, electricals and the compartment door.
If there is one, I'd like to know how it would be attached to the rest of the console.
Good luck... you may need to buy a whole new console to fix it. I've been proven wrong many times in the past....

Aa above, it's for the inner front seat belts. You can get the missing holder in any of the catalogs.

It's the area at the rear of the compartment and forward the ashtray. I guess angie rs/ss must be right. All of the consoles broken it that area are the same. Seems kind of funny that the break has rounded edges.

I have also seen these types of holes repaired with fiberglass. It's something to look in to.

Ahh! I thought you were talking about the area forward of the storage compartment. Sorry! My mistake.
Yeah, you can get the metal bracket thing from a catalog.

That area is a very common area that gets busted out, for lack of enforcement. Mine as well. Instead of dishing out funds for a new one I repaired mine. However I had most of the piece that broke out. I repaired mine with, mar-hyde Flexible Bumper & Plastic Patch that I got at Kragen Automotive. Kinda like Bondo. I also followed the SEM recomendations for plastic prep and painting. Just finished painting it Landau Black. Looks Pretty D good but couldn't quite get the grain of the plastic even though I tried a wrinkle paint in between coats.
Time will tell how she holds up.
