Has anyone tried this? I have a car that had ac and was thinking of putting speakers in the ac vents. It actually sounds like a tacky idea.

My car was originally with ac and I have no plans to put ac in at this point. Instead of replacing the two old side air vents I thought I would put a small speaker in. I have already pulled out the ball and poked a grille into one of the outer bezels and it looks ok. Pretty cool in fact! Has anyone heard or seen this? Trying to figure how to mount the speakers in the two side ac vents without reinventing the wheel. I really just want to do something with the two air vent holes in my dash with tearing up the car. I would post a pic but I don't have a page to host the pictures. Thanks for any advise.

A friend of mine did that to his 67 back in the 70’s, the A/C didn’t work anyway. I bought the car from in the 80’s and pulled them out. I still have one… the speaker is held in place with electrical tape.

At my brothers stereo shop they have been mounting small tweeters in A/C ducts for years. The A/C just blows around them. No air? Mount a bigger speaker. Mount the speakers far enough back to run the chrome balls still.

I put a set in the vent in the kick panels. I molded a fiberglass housing and took out the vent door and mounted the speakers inside. You'd never be able to tell that the kick panels have speakers in them.

Hey Tokala,

Could we get a picture and perhaps the speaker that you installed. I am contemplating do the same thing.

I don't have any pictures of what we did, but I'll check with the guy that did the work. If you looked at the kick panels, you would never know that there were speakers in them. They look exactly like factory. I even left the handle and rod for opening and closing the vent in the kick panel. Let me dig around and see if I have any info on the speakers and what we did.

I've also got speakers in the door panels and we airbrushed the grills to match the yellow/black houndstooth cloth that I used on the door panel.

Tokala,
Did you ever find those pictures. I'm interested to see how this would work. Also what does everybody think is the best size speaker to use, the smallest that I've see is 3.5 inches

Thanks
Doug

I'm looking. If I don't find any, I'll pull the kick panel and take some pictures. If I pull the kick panel, it won't be until after Christmas.
