: Installing 67 Dash tach - what needs to be removed to get to it?

Hello,

I am installing a Dash tac in place of my fuel gauge. The car is a 67 Camaro Convertible(installing a center console so the fuel gauge will be there). What needs to be removed to get the tach out? Does the stearing wheel and column need to come out? What is the best way to get to that area?

I guess what I am asking is . . . is there a specific removal sequence?

Thanks
John

jknotts i had to drop the colum, just take the colum bolts off under the the dash to get it to drop down in order to get the gauge pod out. took the screws out in top and bottom of pod. you will have to take the trim off the bottom of the colum also, were the bolts hold it to the dash. then pulled pod out and unpluged the harness. my speedo was already undone so you may have to take this loose first thing. its not as hard as you would think.some one may have a better way but this is how i took mine out saturday....Luke

Hey Luke,

Thaks for the reply. Question - what is the actual OD of the Spedo - what size aftermarket gauge would I need to order to have it fit nice.

Thanks

I have seen several photo's of five inch autometer guages installed in a 67 68. in place of the stock speedo and fuel..etc...they look real nice.

Just purchased a 5" Autometer Phantom Spedo, Tach, and 2 1/16" Autometer Phantom Oil, fuel and water tamp gauges for the console.

For future ref. of other guys looking to do the same conversion the part numbers are:

5" Tach #5898 $112
5" Spedo #5895 $93
2 1/16" Electric Fuel #5714 $27
2 1/16" Electric Oil #5727 $44
2 1/16" Electric Water #5737 $29

I have the original gauges and they work but they do not really tell you anything. For the $450 that an original 5.5K Dash tach would cost I felt the money would be better spent on matching gauges across the board that give me accurate reading on my engine performance. The white face gauges look good, but not as good as an original spedo, tach, gauge cluster appearance.

If I were doing a straight number matching show type resto I would have chosen to keep the original gauges installed and found an original dash tach, but for my usage and resto purposes I felt the Autometer gauges the better choice.

Sorry to go on so much, but I thought this info might help the next guy.

- John

You didn't mention how you were going to install the 2 1/6 guages in your console.
Autometer has a TRICK GUAGE Housing for your Console. It looks AWESOME, and it's not expensive at just around $40. Check out www.autometer.com (http://www.autometer.com) and put part # 10002 in the search box.

QUESTION: Did it require any special fabrication for the new 5 inch guages, I haven't gotten that far yet, only installed the console guages.

I removed the original (questionable accurace) original gauge and installed the 2 1/16" gauges in their place. Still has the factory console appearance but now with white face gauges.

The 5" Autometer Phamtom Monster tach and Speedo fit right in the houseing of the orignal Speedo and Fuel gauge.

I will take some pics and add them to my web site next week.

Take care,

John
