on a 69 how do you get the mechanism where the key goes in to replace the whole thing

Do a search on "glove box" - there was a thread on how to remove the cylinder back about six months ago. It's also in the Fisher Body Service Manual.

Check this link: http://personal.riverusers.com/~mcphelps/glovebox.htm I know it is for a chevy (of some year) glove box lock. Yours may be similar.
