I have a 68 convert and am installing one of the Kenwood dual speaker dash units. Does the speaker mount up against the dash grill or does it "float" in the air? It only came with one bracket and although it does not fit very well, it looks like it is supposed to be used to mount to the firewall where there is another bracket.

Ok, since you that far into the speaker job in the dash, I only got one work of advice. BUY THE BEST SPEAKERS POSSIBLE ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! As you know, that is quite a job so make sure that you do it the way that you want it the first time. but, the one that I had it was sitting flush pressed again the dash, and it used an existing screw location for the original speaker location. Hope that this helped.

Well, I think I figured it out. There is supposed to be a foam ring around the speaker. Keyword is supposed. New speaker does not have one and the old is long gone. Made up one and bent the new bracket a little and it now fits. As for the speaker choice, I bought the best that I could find! The Kenwood dual is about it for center dash speakers.

I put a pair of 3 1/2" Pioneers in a fiberglass plate and metal bracket I got from NPD. This was the cheapest set that NPD had in their catalog and I took those speakers out just to get the brackets. They float in the air about 1/8" away from the dash opening and the bottom right angle metal bracket screwed right into the same hole as the old speaker. They came with zinc coated bolts to hold the speakers in the fiberglass and you could see them through the windshield. So, I changed those to black bolts instead. Your Kenwoods are probably very comparable to my Pioneers.

I made a plate to hold 2 5" speakers. Then fabricated a bracket that barely hooks on a hole on the front of the dash and attaches in the back (actually toward the front of the car) as factory. I cut out the lip from my original speaker, and bolted it to the plate, and re-installed the rubber gasket. Then covered that with original looking grill cloth. In bright light, if you really look, you can see that there are modern speakers, under the grill cloth. But you really have to look closely.

Should there be a cloth over the speakers? Meaning, was it there originally?

yes, There was a thin, black grill cloth glued to the rubber gasket.

Sounds like you're hard at it. I put one of those Kenwood speaker sets in the wife's 69. It fit pretty good. I made a thin foam seal and thin black grill cloth and it looks really good.

needs to be something over it since dirt will fall down onto the speaker. Ever hear BB's on a speaker before?
