View Full Version : Convertible Boot Attachment
newfhntr Sep 9th, 03, 02:10 PM I need some help in attaching the convertible boot. I have it clipped to the pinchweld molding, but how does the boot attach on the front part behind the rear seat? There must be some way of attaching it so that the wind doesn't lift the front of the boot.
Thanks,
Paul
Mark C Sep 9th, 03, 02:32 PM Nope, just stuff it in behind the seat. The two snaps on the side panel hold the ends down. Make sure it is stuffed in tight on the outer corners of the rear seat. That's the key to keeping the boot from blowing off on the highway.
bspears Sep 11th, 03, 08:00 AM Mark,
That technique does not work.....at least on my car. I finally went to the craft store and got a long roll of velcro tape and used that to secure the flap to the top of the back seat. The boot used to blow loose at 60 mph. This set up keeps it secure and looking good to at least 105 mph. Further testing to follow. I will get some pics and post them but it looks good and works well.

Steve W Sep 11th, 03, 02:11 PM Sounds kinda funky...but better than blowing the boot off the car. Why hasn't someone made a better boot? The clips almost always look goofy,...y'know that wavy look from the back of the car and the snaps, etc.....hmmmmm, maybe a good interior/ conv top guy can modify my boot. By the way, anyone besides me have the glass rear window? I really don't like it. Opinions?
newfhntr Sep 11th, 03, 03:02 PM The velcro sounds like a good mod. I look forward to seeomg the pictures.
bspears Sep 11th, 03, 04:32 PM Here are the pics of my solution to the wind flap.
The first pic shows how smooth and clean it looks.

The second pic is a close-up of the velcro attachment. Sorry the pic is a little blurry.

This is the best solution that I have found and is damn cheap.

rs1968ss Sep 11th, 03, 04:46 PM Funny that you have had that problem. Mine is still the original setup and I have hit 110 with no problems. I have never had any issues with it.
bspears Sep 11th, 03, 05:11 PM Randy,
How do you secure the front flap of the boot?
bob
DjD Sep 11th, 03, 05:52 PM I've also seen triple digit speed and the front of my boot stayed tucked in. The flap on my boot is very rigid.. Not a bad idea though on a dark interior Bob, I don't think it would look good on an ivory interior with the top up though. With a boot like mine the stiff flap wouldn't lay flat against the seat back as well.
Bob, you want to meet at Happy Daze next Thur to check out each others boots? ;) I haven't been all year and our work parking lot is finally not a construction zone so I'd feel safe parking the '69 there during the day.
bspears Sep 11th, 03, 06:58 PM Dennis,
I would love too. I was going today but I just got too busy with homework and back to school night. As next thursday gets closer lets connect again on a time. I would really like to get a closer look at your car.
thanks

bob I just tuck it down behind the rear seat. I have the fiber optic option so I have the pod on the rear seat. I wonder if that may have something to do with it? The boot tucks around it. My boot is pretty tight across the top of the seat. Was yours loose?
DjD Sep 12th, 03, 05:50 AM I have the cobra head also but didn't have it installed when I burried the needle...
Randy any chance you have or can take a couple of close up pic's showing how your cobra head mounts and sits over the top of the seat back?
Bob I'll post something in the curiz-in forum, maybe we can get a few other locals to show up...
bspears Sep 12th, 03, 08:07 AM Dennis......that will be fine.....i will check that forum.

Bob I'll post something in the curiz-in forum, maybe we can get a few other locals to show up... I'll take some pics and post them. Basically, it just screws into the back of the rear seat in the center.

What does that thing do?

DjD Sep 12th, 03, 12:26 PM Bob - it has fiber opitcs running to the real lamps to monitor if the bulbs are working or not. You are susposed to be able to see it in the rearview mirror.
Thanks Randy - That's how I installed mine too but felt something was amis! The way the mounting bracket is contoured I thought it should hug the edge of the seat better. I also felt that with the fiber being somewhat of a perminate wiring that the unit should have been mounted on the seat support (where the back of the seat rests against). There's no way to install the seat back on it's hooks if the cobras head was mounted there though!!
angelglo Sep 12th, 03, 01:28 PM well, i havent seen it posted yet but here is how i did mine. i went to orchard supply and bought a pack of button snaps and the installer for about $2-$3. these are the ones that you see jackets and other nylon items. the convientent thing about them is that you can screw them onto the original holes that hold down the 2nd bow. my boot is a repop so i didnt mind punching 4 holes into them. if you want, you can alway remove them. they hold down very well. it took about 15 mins. to complete the job. if you dont put the boot on, you dont see the snap because they are hidden under the top when folded. here are some pics. look in the folder with the pinchweld.

bspears Sep 12th, 03, 03:11 PM Angel,
I am having a hard time figuring out what you have going there. Are the male snaps mounted on the vert top bar that lies right behind the upper part of the back seat? If that is true that looks like a good solution. How do the male snaps mount to that metal bar?
bob
angelglo Sep 12th, 03, 03:26 PM bob,
that is exactly how it mounts. the female part of the snap is mounted to the boot. the male part is mounted to the bar behind the top of the rear seat. (also called the listing pocket retainer). the great thing about this set-up is that the male part of the snap alread has a hole in the middle of it. just put the factory screw through the snaps and bam! your done. take a look at the pic and you will see the phillips screw through the middle. pretty easy set up. the hardest part is measuring where you are going to put the female side if the snap on the boot and this is not hard at all. as i said, it only took me 15 min. and it is very clean looking.

angelglo Sep 13th, 03, 08:53 AM oh, just thought about it. its exactly how the side snaps are on the boot to the side panels. the male part is also screwed into the side panels. i used bigger snaps for the bow.

MytMini Sep 13th, 03, 05:47 PM Angelglo that is sweet!
Steve W Sep 14th, 03, 06:49 AM Donald,
What an incredible car!!! Great pics and story on your site. Its funny, but our stories are similar. (So are our cars!) I looked forever to find mine, and found it in an ad similar to yours. And the guy wanted the MOON for his car...(he settled for the stars!) I can only assume your car was big bucks too! But it seems like I was starting my search at the same time GM said they were discontinuing the Camaro. Prices zoomed, especially for the convertibles. (y'know...when the top comes down, the price goes up!) I have a few questions, if you don't mind.
In the pics of the trunk, its not too clear in the corners, but it looks like you don't have the cocktail shakers. Do you have them in front? Rear? and how does the car handle. Subframe connectors? I have a little shimmy in the front when going over bumps, and I'm told its because I don't have the weights in front. Just looking for clues.
