I just purchased a 68 with a very complete interior. Two questions came up while cleaning it up and planning what to do with it. First of all, was a cassette player an option that was available in a 68? This car has an old Alpine tape deck that is attached to the back of the dash with a metal band. I cant imagine that it is original but I am not sure. Also, the 3 gauges that are in the dash (oil, temp, and amps) have a brand name of "suntech" or something like that. Would these be the original gauges? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Somebody chime in here if I'm wrong but I think that all you could get in the dash for '68 was AM or AM/FM Stereo. If you wanted to spend the big bucks then you could order the ragin', optional, under-dash mounted 8-track tape player system!!!
Car audio's come a long way in 35 years! :D

Nope, none of that is original. For radios you had the AM, AM/FM mono, and AM/FM stereo. You could additionally order an 8 track that sat under the dash or on top of the console depending on if the car has a console or if it had A/C. No cassette recoders in 68, I think reel to reel was high teck back then.
The only optional stock gauges in a 68 or 69 Camaro were the oil pressure, fuel, water temp and ammeter setup that sat on the top front of the console. Installation of these guages required a tach in the dash pod where the speedometer went originally.

No cassette units, they came out later. It would be interesting to find a reel to reel set up, that would be a RARE option. :D

For the gauges, look at the pics of my Camaro. They are repro's, but thats the way they were in 68.
Also, the guys are right, 8 track was state-of-the-art back then.
I do remember my Dad's 59 Chrysler Imperial had a turntable option!
