: Autometer gauge sets WOW!!!!
sr71bb Aug 24th, 00, 11:35 AM Guys, we have talked about these before, but I saw these in person the other day and they are pretty trick. If I didn't already have sawtooth gauges myself, I would gooble these up. What's interesting is that the picture below in the link shows a clock as one of the four gauges. I added it up and it looks like it cost $229.30 for ALL the gauges and the POD if you stay with the clock and if you use the fuel gauge INSTEAD of the clock it cost $214.75 for the complete setup.
I was curious about availability and when I called, everything at least for now is in stock.
Look towards the bottom of the page in the link below. If you double click on the picture, it will blow it up some more.
What do you think???

Chris Edwards Aug 25th, 00, 03:26 AM if you dont have any in the console now, could I just add the "butt cap" or the end piece where the guages sit into? or is there a bunch more than that.. I want that arctic white clock and others...

sr71bb Aug 25th, 00, 03:34 AM Exactly CHRIS. The POD which is black replaces the panel in the console above the shifter area. The gauges DO NOT require the wiring harness for the OEM sawtooth gauges to operate. You just directly wire them into their senders (if applicable) and into a power source.
I know Patti over at firewheel is restoring her 68 SS350 now and it DID NOT come with gauges. She had the console out with the POD in place and the gauges you see in the picture. It looked like they were born in the console!!! You can use either a green or a red backlite in the gauge itself. I would reccomend the green. The outer edges of the gauges are bright chrome and the red needle makes them real easy to read. As you can tell the gauges are tilted towards the driver. NICE!!!

kz1000ltd Aug 25th, 00, 04:02 AM Man, those do look pretty cool. If I didn't have the original ones in mine, I'd definitely consider it. Maybe I'll list mine on E-bay, make a quick $1000, buy the Autometers and use the rest for body work....
I've got about half the car down to bare metal, should have some new pics posted soon. http://www.geocities.com/kz1000ltd/
sr71bb Aug 25th, 00, 04:11 AM KZ1000LTD,
Funny you mentioned that, I was thinking to myself about the same thing!!!! DON'T TELL ANYBODY!!!

jm69ss Aug 26th, 00, 06:13 AM Hey guys - that's exactly what I did. I sold my originals on e-bay for $400.00 (wasn't even sure if they worked). Bought the complete autometer set-up from Summit for $200.00. Got better gauges, cooler look and a nice profit to boot. I went with the Ultra-Lites with the silver faces.
My next delima is to decide whether or not to sell my stock speedo and 6k redline tach and get the matching 3 3/8" autometer gauges for the dash.
From what I've seen the tachs going for, I could probably make a nice profit here too.
For anyone that's wondering, my '69 SS was so far from original when I bought it that I couldn't justify the cost to put it back stock. So I don't really care about originality.
Black69 Aug 27th, 00, 04:36 PM What is required to replace the original gauges if you have them. Do these hook up to the original harness or do you have to make modifications?
sr71bb Aug 27th, 00, 04:46 PM Black 69,
The original gauges have a separate harness. You could simply disconnect this harness when you remove the original gauges. The AutoMeter gauges are individually wired to a power source (fuse box), a ground and their senders if applicable and as such don't require or use the original gauge harness.
memcgraw Aug 28th, 00, 03:16 AM The gauge pod looks really nice and as the owner of a 67 I'm jealous!... http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
I just added a mechanical oil pressure, water temp, and a voltmeter to mine and ended up mounting them in the chrome cups between the ashtray and the console. Looks pretty good.

Joe Harrison May 14th, 02, 05:38 PM Anyone know if this pod can be modifide or even comes close to fitting a 67 Console. I don't have a console to look at or even know if you could modify the 67's console. Any Ideas?
joe
Joe G May 14th, 02, 07:14 PM The Autometer gauges are easy to install and easy to read while driving. Autometer has a winner with these. You can see them in my sig if interested....
I would advise buying the harness package. Vey well done. I made my own harnes; my buddy bought his. I should have sprung for the extra $50! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif

stingr69 May 15th, 02, 03:16 AM If you arent doing a full resto, I say definately go with the Autometer setup. I have done the work to add factory sawtooth gauges and it works for my resto. Those Autometer packages look and work great and the cost is less too.
Let us resto guys pay thru the nose for your old setup and enjoy the money.
-Mark.
P.S.- I am so glad I don't need to buy any more original parts. They are getting ridiculous $$$$.
69ProTouring May 15th, 02, 03:21 AM I really like the look of the Autometer console package, but I think I would go with the Phantom guages. Right now I'm stuck, can't decide if I should get the Autometer setup, or the dash insert from Detroit Speed & Engineering. Check it out...

Scoop69RS-SS May 15th, 02, 05:43 AM I looked through the Autometer web site and could not locate a wire harness anywhere.
The Firewheel shows a harness under part number 500450, $59.95. Does anyone know where it comes from? Maybe a better question is who it comes from.
Rick.

69ProTouring May 15th, 02, 06:32 AM Rick's First Gen has the harness for the Autometer setup for $59.95, part number AM-14. It doesn't say who makes it, although all their Autometer products start with AM as the first part of the number. It does say that it is pin-to-pin connections with the correct connectors and color codes. Their phone number is 1-800-359-7717 if you want to call and ask about it.

coach420 May 15th, 02, 06:55 AM 69Protouring,
How much does Detroit Speed charge for that dash insert? I have a 67 so I'm looking for options. Another thought is to insert the Autometer gauges in the dash above the heater controls - Autometer makes some small diameter ones - check the PAW catalog.
69ProTouring May 15th, 02, 09:51 AM I believe the DS&E insert is $650 retail. And add the cost of the guages, and you can see it would be quite expensive. I'd love to go that route, but I would like to see the dash in a 69 first. That pic that I linked from Tony Huntimer's www.racehome.com (http://www.racehome.com) is the only pic I've ever seen of the dash with any guages in it. The pics of it at http://www.detroitspeed.com/ don't have any holes in it for the guages. If anyone here knows a dealer that carries DS&E products, let me know.

CrossRamZ11 May 15th, 02, 10:49 AM Look at the DSE website under "Projects" and check out the pics of the white 69 coupe (Jeff Hyosaka or something like that) the dash is in his car and looks great, great gauge layout.

rs1968ss May 15th, 02, 10:57 AM I just finished intalling that pod and gauge setup in my 68. I really like it. I bought the gauges, pod and wiring harness from Firewheel Classics. I ordered 5" Autometer gauges and am going to replace the dash gauges next. Sorry to lose the Tic-Toc but oh well. I already have a buyer for both the console gauges and the dash gauges.

69ProTouring May 16th, 02, 02:45 AM Thanks CrossRam, DS&E must have updated their projects pages since I last looked. That looks great, but I don't know about that layout, I think I would prefer a more traditional layout, but that's just me. If I do it, I'll be sure to take some pics.

bretcopsey May 16th, 02, 05:58 AM Anyone know if there is a harness to add the Autometer speedo and Tach in the dash for a '68?
Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the DSE insert comes with no holes drilled so that one can configure the layout as desired.....
Just a guess

Scoop69RS-SS May 20th, 02, 04:16 AM Just got my auto meter set up for the console. I am a happy camper so far. I called firewheel classic for the harness which should come in this week, mid. I'm currently stuck with some other projects that need to get done before these get installed. Bummer. I also have to decide on the DS&E custom dash or go with the standard dash with the autometers on the console. I am leaning towards the DS&E dash but that will be a huge project unto itself.
You guys know that my car is a clone and it is for that reason that I am leaning towards the DS&E dash. This way, I am in no way, trying to represent my car as anything but a custom, non-standard, what-ever, and it is easy to see that this is my vision, even if I'm not there to explain.
Rick O
PS: ProTouring, thanks for the info. I think Ricks and Firewheel are using the same harness.

GMJim Nov 11th, 02, 10:05 AM Guys
I haven't read all of the posts, but if you go to this site, you can have a look at the same Autometer gauges made for GM with the bow tie emblem in them. They come in black or white face. I have priced them out and they are about the same as the Autometers at the performance shops. Sorry if somebody aleady posted this.

GMJim Nov 11th, 02, 10:15 AM There is a harness for these gauges available at Rick's Camaros. It's a factory fit brand. If you download their catalog you will find it on page 98 www.firstgen.com (http://www.firstgen.com)

Joe G Nov 11th, 02, 08:12 PM Those gauges look pretty cool. I only saw them in 2 5/8" though. 2 1/16" is what fits in the console pod. Wonder if they make them in the smaller size?

chief Nov 12th, 02, 03:51 AM I put the Autometer's in my '68 and love them. I used the black faces to better match the stock speedo and fuel gauge. Since I had the 4th hole free, I put a mini tach in it. It isn't perfect for racing, but it is better than no tach!! Can't see forking over the bucks for a factory tach which since I put in an HEI, I'm not sure would work anyway. I haven't made the jump to the Autometer speedo and tach dash I've seen pictures and like the way they look. I also like the compromise between just the pod and stock speedo/fuel gauge ie. slightly modified, easy to return to stock.
My car is not 100% original, but if that's an issue in the future, you can always yank the pod and put the insert back in....
460 Nov 12th, 02, 06:30 AM Does anyone have the part #'s for the 5 inch tach and speedometer to fit the 68's.
rs1968ss Nov 12th, 02, 07:45 AM I have the part numbers at home but if you go over to Summits website and search for Autometer Phantom 5" you should be able to find them pretty easily.
