I started cleaning mine up last night and I can't tell if the whole thing is supposed to be real shiny black plastic or did they paint it with a 60-70% gloss black paint? Mine could just be so dirty it looks like semi-gloss paint, but the inside edges are shiney black plastic. Which should it be?

Really, really shiny like glossy black? If so, mine is dirty as heck or someone sprayed it with semi gloss black. The back side and inside edges are shiny, but the front is semi gloss. Looks like I'll need to use a lot of elbow grease.

Jeff,
The best color I have found to use is a semi flat black KRYLON. If you are going to paint the inside of your glove box door and ash tray, I would also suggest this color. Gloss black, while shinier, magnifys the small imperfrctions that are generally present in the dash and other surfaces.
Mccorry,
You're correct. I was thinking dash instument cluster. I bought a reproduction console gauge cluster cover the other day and I would call it a semi-gloss black color. It is gloosier than my dash instrument cluster which is definitly a semi flat black color.

Actually, I'm referring to the dash cluster that holds the speedometer and tach/gas gauge. I started cleaning a small area of the plastic along the bottom mounting area with thinner and it came up real shiny glossy black and the towel had black on it so I thought it was paint coming off. The insides of the dash gauge cluster are also shiny glossy black, but the areas that faces into the driver seem to be a semi gloss finish or mine is so dirty(and it isn't that dirty) it just looks like semi gloss. I thought that the shiny glossy color would reflect the sun too much and potentially blind the driver.

Jeff,
The dash instrument cluster that holds the speedometer and fuel gauge (or tach) is NOT as glossy a black as the cover for the four gauge setup that is located in the console. Even if they were painted the exact same color the console instument cover would "appear" to be shinnier because it is a very smooth surface compared to the grainy surface that you find on the dash insturment cluster. That is why I reccomend painting the dash cluster a semi flat black and the console instrument cover a more "glossy" black (only if it needs it!!).
I am not aware of any other "legitimate" colors that the instrument dash cluster came from the factory other than black. I have seen in pictures however of a dark blue cluster and a dark green cluster but I do not think that they came from the factory that way.
All my clusters were black. Maybe we can get someone else to confirm this.
