Someone painted my ball vents and pull knobs in my 68 flat black. Ugh. Does anybody know what kind of solvent that might be safe to try to remove it without melting the chrome? Is it actually chrome on there or what? I don't want to damage anything and other than the paint they seem to look ok. Thanks in advance for any help!

the reason they probably painted them was because the y needed replacement. you could try a couple different ways but it may not work. you can try oven cleaner which is a low grade paint remover, or brake fluid but it may sofen the plastic. you can try mineral spirits first if its enamel baseed paint, the step up to gasoline( do it outside please) you might have to soak your balls ( the vent ones) overnite to soften the paint. by all means do not use laquer thinner, it will ruin the chrome and melt the plastic. good luck

I think you will find you need new ones. If the chrome was in good shape the paint wouldn't stick very well unless it was scuffed up with sand paper or something. My guess is the paint was to cover up the damaged chrome... Check with Ground Up or any of the other Camaro parts stores, I don't think new replacements will break the bank.

I purchased a ball vent kit from classic a few months ago. It included the balls, ball-housings, gaskets etc. I think it cost about $70. I haven't put it in yet, but looks to be a suitable replacement.
