View Full Version : Gauge mounting alternatives
SOUTHWNR Jan 4th, 02, 09:16 AM Has anyone mounted any guages in a first generation camaro on the pillars using aftermarket gauge pods? Like in a lot of newer cars Ive seen? If so, how did it turn out? I need the extra gauges, however I dont care for the ones that bolt up under the ashtray. I was thinking this would look like it "belonged" more. Has anyone else done any creative gauge mounting without cutting the dash? Thanks.
camaro freak Jan 4th, 02, 10:32 AM Im not sure if you have a middle console but
have you seen the pods that Autometer puts out for 67-69 Camaros. The pod mounts in front of the shifter and it holds 4 gauges.
I put it in my '68 and love it.
clash69 Jan 4th, 02, 06:00 PM Did the same, real happy with the look, didnt lock the gauges up just in case a bulb goes, didnt want to take the console apart again.
RickD Jan 5th, 02, 04:08 AM You can use a pillar pod. Perhaps my brother will see this post. He took a Mustang one and used a heat gun to slightly recontour. Works well. In my case, since I don't have a radio, I made a two gauge panel from aluminum and put it in the radio space. Then I put cherrywood contact paper over the panel. It looks like a factory install.

SOUTHWNR Jan 5th, 02, 08:47 AM RickD,
What size gauges did you use? Did you cut the dash? Let me know how your brother's turns out.
Gary Dorion Jan 5th, 02, 05:33 PM I did see the post Rick. You can get the guage pod from Summit. I'm not sure the number but I can check. I believe it was for the 79 and up . The pod will work great . I have it fitted, but not installed. The size guage I think is 2 1/16. I can check it out.
Joe G Jan 5th, 02, 11:01 PM In my 69, I have a 3-gauge panel (2 1/16") installed where the center A/C vent would be. You need an A/C dash pad but the gauge panel fits in the factory metal dash cutout perfectly. It puts the gauges at eye level as well.
To you guys that have the Autometer console pods: where did you buy them and what color/type of gauges did you use? I'm looking at doing that as well, but not sure where to get one and which gauges would work best. Any pics?.
Thanks
joe

RickD Jan 6th, 02, 03:29 AM SOUTHWNR - I used Autometer 2 1/16". I only had to slightly file a small spot on the bottom edge of the opening in two places so the gauge would fit.
Joe G - Do you have any pics? My brother and I were talking about doing that. I would think you could modify a regular pad to work. Maybe use the Autometer beveled rings to angle them and serve to cover the hole edges. I used them in my install and it makes them easier to read.

I have pics of the Autometer pod in my car, over at... http://hobbystage.net/camaro/tomstv
I got it stright from Autometer.
Joe G Jan 6th, 02, 11:16 AM I just addded some interior pictures to the Hobbystage site. They're not current, but they do show the gauges in the dash.
Tom, I like the black gauges you have. How easy are the console gauges to see while driving?

Gary Dorion Jan 6th, 02, 11:32 AM The guage pod # from Summit is ATM-10100. Works great!

The meters are facing toward the driver,so they are easy to view at a glance. Got my tach up on the steering column,as I watch that a lot closer.
ORENCH Jan 6th, 02, 02:37 PM Joe G, I ordered my console pod as a kit from firewheelsclassic.com I oredered the ultra lite ones but finding a not so big tach to match them was a little difficult. I ended with a Sunpro slimline white face on the steering column. The ultralite big face from Autometer was a little "big" for my taste.

Ordered pod from Autometer about 48 bucks, used the little green bulb covers to over bulbs to give it the same effect as the dash lights, also dont lock the gauges in so when bulb blows u dont have to take the console all apart.
Joe G Jan 6th, 02, 09:25 PM Thanks, guys. I really like the console pod. Now I just need to decide on white or black gauges! http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
I'm not sure I follow on not "locking in" the gauges, tho'.

Joe G Jan 7th, 02, 03:42 PM I ordered the console and white Phantom gauges today from Summit. The gauges are in stock http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif; the console pod is back ordered for a couple weeks. http://www.camaros.net/forum/frown.gif
Oh well, patience is a golden virtue!
It should look great when it's done.
