I have a 67 with deluxe interior and the seatbelts with the coach on it. I had both driver and passenger side fail in the past month.
The male side goes in but you don't here a click and then it releases without pushing the release button. How can i fix it?

Sounds like they have "gunk" in them. I'd hang them in a bucket of hot soapy water for a while and press the bottons a bunch to try and free the mechanisum. Then a spray with some WD-40 might keep them working.

You can snap off the cover, and see what the problem is. It's a simple mechanism, so I'm sure you can see the problem. I'll bet it's a broken spring on the clip.

Unreal, I have the coach style which part unsnaps, it is all steel. It looks like you have to bend tabs to open it up.

Oh, sorry, I was thinking about the plastic ones. Not sure about the Deluxe, but I have seen just the metal covers on ebay. guy said convert to deluxe by Just snapping off the plastic and snapping on the metal ones.

I know, I know. ebay is not a reliable technical source.

I just took my belts apart last night. On the rear side of the buckle, opposite the female side, just take a flathead screw driver and pry the top of the cover off of the base. Didn't bend anything and it went back together just fine.

OK, I just had to step in smile.gif The plastic belts and the metal deluxe belts are not the same and no parts will interchange (except the webbing itself and the floor anchor)

Plastic - gently pry up one side to get the tab to leave the slot, then do the other side, then lift the front gently while sliding cover to the rear. Be very gentle and careful, they crack easily! Once the cover is off and the button fell out you can see if your spring is broken

metal - you take a very small screwdriver and gently pry the end oppposite the tongue slot, once you've pryed up each corner, lift the rear of the cover up to clear the bottom, then slide to towards the tongue slot and unhook. The deluxe buckle spring is a formed piece of sheet metal that can only be removed by taking the belt out of the buckle and removing the thing that the belt goes around.

The sheet metal spring does rot quite easily and must be replaced.

I can send internal pics of both if you guys want some.

Thanks for the reply if you can send some photos of the deluxe seatbelts it would be great. Whithout the cover removed it does look like the hinge spring is rotted. Where would i be able to get those hinges springs?

Here is the pic of the buckles. standard on the right, deluxe on the left. Rear deluxe is together, forward is the spring and belt tensioner separate from the chrome back.

If you have a spring problem I should have some extras. I have been trying to get into the seatbelt restoration biz, but got stuck on chroming issues (no more good pieces left to build until I get them rechromed!). But I have the rest covered.

Could be yours, could be... smile.gif It's all mixed together, so I don't know where they all came from.

Thanks for the pics. I'm trying to shake a hangover and it looks like rain tomorow I'll tackle the seatbelts on Tuesday, If I need any I'll let you know. BTW, I had come to English Town for a corvette day at the track, any such events for first gen camaros?

E-Town holds a SLP day with Camaros. I don't think there is a 1st gen specific event (wish there was!)

Kevin, finally got at the seatbelt. Once I got it apart I cleaned it up inside with WD 40 and found that the whole mechanism had shifted away from the mouth of seatbelt and it wasn't allowing the male to latch on. After several succesful latches I preceeded to put the coach button on and tried to check it one more time and it latched, however it doesn't unlatch. It's locked in. How the #$%$ do I get it off? What I think I did wrong was i bent the back peice of steel to lock the L-shaped lip of the coach peice to the lip of the spring. In retrospec I think the coach tin should just sit on top. Please help.

Yes, the button just rests on the spring. The thicker end of the button rests on top of the main part of the spring (the highest part in the center) and is slid into the front edge of the cover before putting together.

Just take the cover off of the buckle again, remove the button. Unhook the tongue. Then reassemble the cover and button. Hold the whole buckle upside down when you put the cover and button on. This helps to hold the button in the right place.

Thanks for your help Kevin, the wife will now get back in the car. Thank god I was not sitting in the seat when i was trying the seatbelt on and it locked. That would have made a good story. BTW any ideas on where i could purchase the black coach button in the seatbelt mechanism? I need two of them. graemlins/beers.gif
