View Full Version : headliner clips
KURT May 15th, 01, 06:41 AM I am having my 69 Camaro dipped. I have to remove the galvanized braces that the headliner attaches to above the front winshield and the back glass. The front braces are screwed in, but the rear braces (3 of them) are fastened to the body with some sort of clips. They are impossible to remove without destroying the original clips, plus a few of the clips are rusted away. Does anyone know where to get these clips, or is there another type of fastening device that will work"?
Dan Smart May 15th, 01, 10:12 AM Kurt,
Check out E-Bay. I just saw a set up for auction this afternoon. I have a set on the way from the same vendor; they must have a bunch of them.
Hope this helps,
Dan

RFrenette May 15th, 01, 10:55 AM Are they welded in?
Dan Smart May 15th, 01, 01:36 PM I just went out to the garage to see if they look like they were welded. I could not see anything that looked like weld marks. The holes line up with the original bows.
I removed the original headliner a few years ago, before the complete resto, and I did not see the clips I just ordered.
I figured they might be riveted to the roof frame to give a rigid stance to the bows.
I'll admit though, the headliner never lost it's taughtness, even though there were no clips in the roof frame.
I'll figure it out when the clips arrive this week.

KURT May 15th, 01, 03:41 PM I don't know if we are talking about the same thing. The braces I'm taling about are galvanized steel. They completely surround the rear window except for the bottom. there is one located directly above the rear window and there is one on each side of the rear glass( the side pieces hold the interior sail panels on. Once the headliner is on the plastic headliner moulding slips onto the headliner covered braces. These galvanized braces are attached to the inside rear window frame with a type of push clip. These clips are what I'm looking for.
gotsnappy May 14th, 08, 01:25 PM How do you get the push clips out?? this are the ones by the rear window.
thanks

mb302rs May 14th, 08, 02:01 PM Rusty , here are some pics to help explain. The first pic is the part you see when installed. the second shows how the center spear shaped points spread the fastener. third pic is a side view.If you take a small flat screw driver and pry up on the two center spears it should allow you to pull it out.
kreynolds30 May 14th, 08, 04:11 PM I havn't found the correct name for the metal strips mentioned here but I call them headliner tack strips. My 68 has 4 pieces around the back window and 2 around the front. I took these off when I had my car blasted, they had the same clips mentioned here and were a bear to get out. I have looked for these clips and nobody makes them. I was told by an interior guru that a small phillips head self tapping screw will work in it's place. I was told to clamp the pieces to the area where they go, line up the clip holes and then drill a small hole next to the clip hole area for the self tapping screw. There is a double wall of metal and going through the roof should not be a problem according to my source. This is what I plan on doing unless I can find these clips which I doubt. You might want to buff these metal strips real good with a buffing wheel and clean out the sharp barbs that hold the headliner before you re-install them.
Hope this helped.

gotsnappy May 15th, 08, 09:25 AM thanks for the info, I got them out but i broke a few!
esahlin Jun 4th, 08, 05:03 PM Can anyone direct me to a picture or a thread on the board here that shows what the "headliner tack strips" or "headliner braces" look like installed around the rear window? I cant find the two rear side pieces and cant figure out what they look like or how they attach to the roof bracing. I found a long straight one that I believe goes above the rear window. Are the side pieces only used to attach the rear sail panels to or are they also involved in securing the headliner?
I took the interior apart ten years ago and am having a real crappy time trying to locate all the pieces besides trying to remember what they look like or how they go back on the car.
jl8dale Jun 5th, 08, 12:02 PM I am in need of about (6) of these clips myself if anyone comes across some extras.
Thanks.
kreynolds30 Jun 5th, 08, 07:38 PM I have searched hours for these clips, I have called numerous upholstery shops and nobody makes these anymore so I'm told. One of the upholstery guys I talked to tells me he uses a small flat head phillips screw to re-install these strips. I will be tackling this issue real soon, whenever my car gets out of paint prison. I'm told to line the strips up in there origninal location. Then drill a small pilot hole next to every area where a clip goes. Then insert the screw which will secure the strip to the roof. I'm also told that the roof area is double walled so a small screw will not go through the roof. I still plan on going this route. If anybody knows differently or does happen to find these clips, let us know.
