: Anyone else have a Maytag Neptune?

This washer is involved in a class action suit and I can see why -- we've had problems with ours since day 1. Mold in the bottom (3x), motor controller circuit board burned out (1X), door latch broken (1X), won't drain correctly (2X). All in 5 years.

Well get this . . . because of the law suit Maytag refuses to come and repair my washer which currently is not draining correctly. So I guess I need to just live with the problem forever ?????? Maybe I can just go to the laundromat for the next 6 months

We called the law firm that started the law suit and they said basically we're screwed until the suit is settled. they expect that the settlement will include a certificate towards a new MAYTAG washer. For cryin' out loud . . . like I want another Maytag.

Sorry, had to vent. Anyone out there have any good ideas? My Chinchilla takes dust baths . . .

does not surprise me. right out of high school i delivered appliances, and we quit carrying maytag because more than half the time, they would either not work from the get go, or wouldn't last long. my brother recently bought a neptune set (well a few years ago), i told him absolutely no maytag stuff, but, he found out the hard way by getting them. nothing but trouble, he sold them with his house. the fridges were crap as well, something tells me nothings changed.
maytag repairman loneliest guy in town? yeah cause hes always on service calls. the old ones were top notch (like 30 years plus ago), and they are still living off of the glory, i guess.

The nuns that live on my second floor have a Maytag washing machine. A while back, one of them mentioned that something minor went wrong with it. She expressed suprise because "Maytags are supposed to last". I asked her how long they've had it and she said "Oh, about 40 years".

We have a Neptune dryer - has a bad "start" switch.

I think somewhere I read you should never run your chinchilla through the dryer - I assume the same holds true for the washer.

If you really want a front loader, I have heard that the Whirlpool Duet is a great machine. Our friends bought a set (washer and dryer) and they are very happy with them.

We didn't want to spend the $$ on a front loader, so we stayed with a conventional top load design. We ended up buying a Fisher & Paykel washer. It's not a very common brand here in the states, but apparently they are big in other countries. It's a great machine and mimics a lot of the features of a front loader. It meters water very carefully so you don't use a full tub of water for a small load. It also spins the clothes at 1000 RPM so they come out of the machine practically dry. The dryer cycle now takes no longer than a wash cycle. Lastly, the washer is built as a direct drive. There is no belt drive or transmission mechanism so the machine is built to be strong and reliable. From the research I did, the consensus on the machine is that it's great and I would agree. My wife loves it too. It cost about the same as the other major brands.

Eric if I was u I would buy a used washer and stick it out and hope for a good settelment. As a college student I will be the first to tell you that u can get a decent washer out of the paper for around $50-$100 bucks. I have never owned a new washer and mine has lasted me for years.

We've had our Maytags for 3 years. Sure cost a bunch, but Sharan loves them. We haven't had any trouble (yet).
Man I shouldn't have said that!!

I didn't even get 5 years out of mine. I got a matching GE set about 2 1/2 years ago. The dryer still works OK (it never worked great, just OK), and the washer always worked great until a few weeks ago and it locked up solid...with a load of laundry and a half a tub of water in it. With me working out of state, of course. I picked up a used Amana commercial model extra capacity washer that was only a couple of years old for $100, and so far it works perfect. It has the stainless basket and all this other heavy duty stuff. Dang thing tried to kill me unloading it by myself though.

I still can't get over the fact that Maytag will not repair my washer even at my expense. Looks like its time again to roll up my sleeves and see if I can coat hanger this POS together.

If the thing wouldn't break down so much the washer would be great. It's by far the quietest washer I've ever owned and clothes seem to last a real long time with it.

The dryer seems to be fine -- no problems.

We bought one and three months after the purchase, got the letter on the law suit. We have not had a problem with the door or mold, but I'd like to hear more about the draining issue that was mentioned.

Like, what do you mean? I thought it was an attribute to front loaders to, apparently, leave some water at the bottom of the basin.

When the wash is finished, sometimes I'll spin the basket to see if there a sock stuck to the top of the wash basket at the top. Know what I mean? So, when I spin the wash basket, I hear a whooosh, splashing sound from water still in the basin.

Are you telling me this is a fault and the basin should be empty?

More info please. Thx.

Rick.

We have had ours for 4.5 years now. Had to have the door lock and circuit board replaced once, they did it under warrantee. I've seen the mildew on the bottom of the front seal, but if you bleach it, it goes away. I have not had the problem with the water not draining, but I suspect it has to do with the door latch. I believe the tub has water enclosed in it for balancing when spinning. I have always heard the water when you spin the tub by hand. I don't know what to think about the law suit. So far I have not encored any expenses for repairs. I think the lock mechanism is the main problem with the hole washer.

The deal with the water in the basin is that there is about 6" left in the bottom after a load is completed. I understand that there will always be a little left in there but I'm talking about clothes that are dripping water when you pull them out.

I think the drain problem has to do with the door latch problem, but I am not sure how these two problems are related. Maybe the washer will not spin if the door latch switch isn't sensed as shut? Maybe I could jumper the switch out as a temporary fix.

I think you guys with the newer washers got the "new and improved" version. The really bad ones were built 4 - 5 years ago when I got mine.

i'd avoid maytag altogether, they have been hit and miss for 15+ years at least (mostly miss). ever hear of a pretty crappy budget based brand called magic chef? same parent company as maytag, maycor is the name. unfortunately, same thing goes for GE, not all but most of thier stuff is problem ridden (i'm talking major appliances).
the stuff thats always been top notch is amana (which is also speed queen washer dryers), thier refers are great, whirlpool, the upper end stuff, and kitchen aid (which is basically top of line whirlpool) is also excellent. you michigan guys should know whirlpool, they are(used to be?) built in benton harbor. the beauty of all the brands i mention as being good is they are, yes thats right, AMERICAN MADE!, for those of you that that matters to, it does me.
there are also some excellent european brands, as was mentioned, fisher and paykel, and others. some of the euro dishwashers are amazing. but if maytag prices deter you, the euro stuff will scare you, its usually very pricey.
this btw is not opinion based entirely, an old freind owns an appliance store, and i delivered them for a few years out of high school, so i saw first hand what was problematic.
and yes, my wife was also "coveting" the double dryer that maytag makes, untill i reminded her it was a maytag. but in reality, the dryers are seldom the issue, its the washer thats going to give you problems first. just an fyi graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Eric I can sympathize with you. I bought a Maytag a few years ago, for the brand new. Well I'll tell you today you can't give me a Maytag. I will never buy that brand again. It never would stay in balance from day 1. I leveled it repeatedly, but nothing made a difference. The thing would walk across the room until it was at the end of the power cord during a load of laundry. It didn't matter how you loaded it all the clothes would end up on one side of the washer and obviously wouldn't dry during the spin cycle because the machine couldn't spin the off balance load fast enough or the thermal protection in the motor would shut it off half way through the cycle. After two years of hell with that machine the transmission gave out. I had called Maytag repeatedly about the machine, but they were no help. I went back to GE. I had a GE last 15 years once and I never spent a penny on maintenance for it. I'm hoping the new machine will do half as well as that. I put the Maytag out to the road and made sure there wasn't a good part on it with a little help from my Louisville Slugger. I wanted to make sure no one would mistake it for a washing machine and take it home with them. It also gave me a little satisfaction to put the machine out of it's misery. In hind sight I should have taken it back to Best Buy and hung a sign on it explaining what a quality product it was.

If Maytag repairmen are really lonely I suspect it has nothing to do with being bored, but rather that no one wants to talk to the guys because everyone is so upset with them. I know if I built something and supported it so poorly I'd be lonely too.

Ok ... for whatever it's worth, my brother has a Maytag Side by side ref./freezer and it too is a big piece of cr*p. He has had it for about 5 years now and about ready to heave it off a cliff. He got it thinking Mytag had a good rep. So there lies the value in marketing and advertising I guess.

Eric68, if you have a copy of the class action suit, read it again. In section 8, it reads "Maytag has agreed to attempt to fix your machine without cost to you. If not successful after a listed number of attempts, you will be issued a Washing Machine Purchase Certificate"
There's alot more info you need to know that I'm not really willing to type out here, but if you've had at least two repairs done on your machine (the date of purchase matters also) you need to send in a claim form. If you don't have one, call toll free 1-866-288-0515 or go to www.maytagfrontloadsettlement.com (http://www.maytagfrontloadsettlement.com)
If you don't do anything, you'll lose out.

Their new line of dishwashers didn't work out too well, either; several of my neighbors specified them for their new homes based on "the Maytag name's reputation", and they were junk - didn't clean well, noisy, pump failures, etc. I specified Bosch (based on previous experience), haven't had a problem; cleans well, and it's so quiet you can hardly hear it.

We brought our Whirlpool (G.E.) washer and electric dryer from our previous home; they've run flawlessly since 1989. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Regarding newer version: Yes, I believe we got the newer version that doesn't have the door or mold problem.

...but I'm wary.

I guess we've been lucky. I bought a new Maytag washer and dryer set in 1982 and they're still working great. We had a few minor repairs in the last couple of years but nothing serious. I expect them to die one of these days and had just planned to get a new set until I read this thread.

My Father ran an appliance coin op. company for over 40 years in Seattle. He dealt with many companies over those years, but relied and trusted the brand "Speed Queen", and Maytag dryers (he never liked the washers...) When I bought my new house a few years back, I had to leave my new set at the condo for the buyer, so I went to a refurb shop and got a kitchenaid washer and a Maytag gas dryer. Everythings great with the set and they are about 15 years old now.
With washers, the mechanism that changes speed usually goes out first, the motors are right behind (for most manufacturers) I believe that my Dad would be freaked out to see the quality (or lack of) that goes into most appliances these days. Ofcourse, you could go out and buy a chrome sub-zero for 10k, but there goes your crate engine :D Most of the brands you see in department stores are manufactured by some other well known company and it's "hit or miss" on the quality. It really is true that you get what you pay for, although I have seen the price on the Neptune set and it's not priced for all the problems I'm reading about here. Good luck on the lawsuit and keep us posted!

Don't know much about washers, but I just bought new LG's. The only reasong I did was because the lights look cool when they light up in the dark. That's the truth. I bought a 6 year warranty which leaves a lot of time for my cars. Check them out!
