View Full Version : Your first car?
zuma Nov 29th, 02, 01:57 PM I just thought I would ask, what was your first car, how did you get, any good stories? and what happened to it? Mine was a 1960 red/white chevy Brookwood wagon with a 283 and a powerglide. Bought it for $225.00 off an old woman whose husband just died (it was his car) The interior was covered in that old bumpy plastic. I removed it and the gray interior was mint. I thought the radio was broke, but after a minute it started to work, must have been a tube radio. Sold it 6 months later to my neighbor, and a week later blew the trans...He did pull the 283 and put it a 65 chevy truck, and got a few years out of it. For a 17yr old kid, that was a pretty cool first car...Mike
67RSM3 Nov 29th, 02, 02:17 PM Mine was a 1956 DeSoto Firedome with a 392 Hemi, push button automatic. Two tone, light blue and white. Drove like a tank. With a 16 year old behind the wheel, everybody got out of my way.
Humm, come to think they still do. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

68rs406 Nov 29th, 02, 04:15 PM my first car was a 68 camaro, six cylinder three speed. paid 1000 bucks for it, in 1986. i traded a guy a honda odyssey i had rebuilt and my labor to repaint it and repair the body issues, (this car taught me to look for a rust free camaro,) and rebuilt my first smallblock, a pretty nasty little 283, and put it in place of the faithful little 250 (which i believe is still sitting at my parents house somewhere). it was a lot of fun, even w/ the 3 speed. i started working as an auto mechanic right after i finished the car (1987). i was a junior in high school, and quickly realized the fact i loved working on my cars didn't mean i would enjoy working on other peoples junk. i became tired of my camaro by about 19, sick of being a working mechanic, and sold my beloved 68 "dream" car, for 3000, in '89. it was worth more, but i was just done. ( if i had a scanner i would post some pic's) the kid i sold it to had it for about a month and half, and totalled it while out drinking. it was kind of sad, i put close to a year into rebuilding it to my specs, but oh well. 68's have always been my favorite, so i knew thats what i was getting when i went looking for one again. this time a rust free 68 rs smallblock car, and i wont be selling it any time soon.

Rons68 Nov 29th, 02, 05:27 PM My first car was a '69 Camaro. My dad got it for a good price when I was 15. It had a 307 with a 3 speed w/floor shifter. I crushed my left ankle before my 16th birthday, and after I got my cast off I couldn't push the clutch in. I ended up with a '75 Cutlass after that. I sure hated to see that Camaro go; I wonder sometimes what became of it.
Ratchetman454 Nov 29th, 02, 05:28 PM Mine was a big block 4 speed 69 Camaro. Bought it at age 15 with $1250 I earned mowing grass. Learned to drive a stick-shift in that car with my dad riding shotgun. It was my daily driver and weekend racer for 4 years until I caught the stupids and sold it.
novaderrik Nov 29th, 02, 05:41 PM 1978 Chrysler Cordoba- scariest car i have EVER driven. the whole front end was shot. had to keep turning the wheel 1/2 turn either way to keep it straight, but i got it for free from my cousin. it was green with red doors- and the interior matched. green "Corinthian Leather" with red door panels. the 360 really smoked the right rear tire like there was no tomorrow, and the thermoquad carb shot about 10 gallons of gas into the engine for every 20 miles of driving- perfect for a 16 year old kid.

HwyStarJoe Nov 30th, 02, 04:40 AM Rusted out blue 1971 Duster, bought from Grandma for $1 in 1977. So rusted out that the bottoms of the doors flapped like wings. I wish I took pictures of it because it was "decorated" in true party-mobile fashion with things that would get me arrested in this day and age. That slant 6 ran like a monster for 4 years.

camaroman7d Nov 30th, 02, 06:45 AM My first car was a 1974 Plymouth Duster with a 318ci engine. I used it for everything including off roading and jumping (I'm very serious). I am so lucky to be alive after the way I drove that thing. Ended up breaking the K frame and selling the engine and trans to one of my uncles. I drove it around for several months with the broken frame, tires wearing out and squiling even going in a straight line (what a dummy). The car was bought from another uncle for $300. It was gold with a snake-skin top. This is also the car that taught me it is not a good idea to Armor All a big flat vinyl bench seat, almost slid out of the passenger side dooron the first left hand turn I made.

69vert Nov 30th, 02, 06:55 AM Mine was a 69 VW bug that was painted gold.(Dad sold Gold and Silver, hence the gold paint job) My dad gave me the car when I was 15 and told me we had a year to replace the motor and get it running. It was a fun father/son project, not to mention a cool ride once I shved the molding, lowered it and painted it aquatic metalic blue.

302Z Nov 30th, 02, 07:08 AM My Dad made a standing offer when I was a kid that he would match whatever dollar amount I could earn/save for a first car. In 1978 and shortly after turning 16 I had 1500 bucks together and decided on a 1969 Z/28. We looked at several over the next couple of months but Dad shot them down for one reason or another. We finally found a clean low mileage Z and bought it. I'll never forget driving that car home and my Dad offering it a spot in the garage. Little did I know that I would not drive that car again for over a week, as he immediately had it up on blocks and wanted to go through the brakes and make sure the car was in overall safe condition before turning me loose in it. The car was a RS/Z28, ralley green, M21, 4:10 posi, and manual steering. That was the least optioned car I think I have still ever seen. In those days every other stop light was a potential street race. After a year or so I had that car tuned razor sharp (with help from many people) and knew how to launch a 302 powered car. The only cars I was ever worried about encountering on the street were the occasional big block. I sold that car in 1980 and a guy that worked at the local chevy dealer bought it. He added almost every option known to man to that car. A couple of years later I was in the Army and was talking cars with this guy I met in Texas. Turned out his brother was the current owner of that car and was in Northern California at that time. The California license plate " 1CLEANZ " was still with the car and thats how we knew it was my old car. They sent me some recent (at the time) photos. I lost track of the car about 10 yrs ago. I never kept the VIN number, but I'm sure if a L.A. built ralley green RS/Z still has that plate its my old car. If anyone knows of this car, I'd like to get back in touch with the current owner and pass on my contact info in case the car ever comes up for sale. Any help would be much appreciated. Bob

boodlefoof Nov 30th, 02, 07:18 AM Here it is... www.geocities.com/boodlefoof (http://www.geocities.com/boodlefoof) http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif It has come a long way since purchase.
Yup, the '68 was my first car. It is kind of funny how I came about getting the car... I was 15 and my dad told me he would help me buy a car of my choice. I had saved up every penny I had ever gotten for birthdays and such, so I had a little bit to get something halfway decent.
I decided that I wanted something different... I didn't know what, but something. I wasn't very well versed in cars at this time, but I figured that if I looked in the antiques and classics section, I would find something cool.
So, finally the day for my first test drive came... it wasn't a Camaro, but rather was a '69 Chevelle SS396. After stabbing the throttle of a that car, I was hooked. Before that all I had driven was a 4 cylinder pickup, a 4 cylinder minivan, and a 4 cylinder Dodge Aries!!!
Anyway, the Chevelle was out of my price range, so the search continued. Without even knowing what a first gen Camaro looked like, I set up an appointment to go see one. We drove out to the boonies and came to the address in the trailer park. This guy had a bunch of old cars he was selling, but the Camaro was the most beautiful design in my opinion.
Took it for a test drive, (it needed work, but did run), said I liked it, and without any negotiations he agreed to knock $2500 off the paper's listed price, which put it right in my price range! The deal was done, the next weekend we went out and got the car.
Then, the hardest part was still having 3 months until my birthday and having to just stare at the car in the garage and then beg my parents to ride shotgun so that I could drive it after they got back from work.
69lemans Nov 30th, 02, 07:45 AM 63 Impala, a friend gave me the body and I rebuilt a 283 for it. It was the first car I painted myself. Before I even had it licensed a friend with a 63 ss ask to trade, he broke the frame where the upper control arm mounts to the frame. I said sure, we welded a plate and bolted the arm back on. This car was my first "hot rod" 327 4 speed, drove it for 4 years. link ot pic http://hobbystage.net/camaro/media.cgi?site=69lemansii&folder=*&group=1&page=*&id=1024360184-000433

LukeSkywalker Nov 30th, 02, 07:53 AM Mine was a 1962 Chevy II with a straight 6. By the time I finished High School it had a 327, 12.5 compression, 292 Crane cam, gear drive (everyone though I had sand in my oil), 3000 converter and 4.11 open rear end. I was running high 14's and burning the one tire half way down the track. Eventually it got wrecked to many times and sold it for my Camaro I have now.

Sweet little car,I drove it for three years,puffed the 327,put in a 283 and sold it.Bought the 69 Z/28,which I still have(27 years later).
As a side note,I think i saw my old 68 a few weeks ago.I had noticed that, from the rear, the body contours of the 67-68 were very similar to the 68 Corvette.I bought a set of fiberglass fender flares for a Vette and grafted them on to my Camaro.Sure enough, they fit pretty well.Any way I saw a pretty, black 68 with the same flares on it recently.Anybody in southeastern MA know who's car that is? Just curious to see if it's my first car.

zuma Nov 30th, 02, 09:01 AM I thought I would mention my second car, a Blue 64 Cutless F85 with a 330 V8 and an auto. It had airshocks pumped all the way up in the back and welded spindles up front. Raising the car up in the front and rear about 2-3 inches. Back in the day (1977) alot of cars were "jacked up" like that. I showed a picture of my olds to my sons (twins, 16 yrs old) and they asked why I had made my car a 4 wheel drive. They did say that is was "sick". (cool)..LOL. 68resto Dec 1st, 02, 04:11 AM Hello Gang,
My first car was a 67 mustang fastback GTA. I was a mustang guru. After a week I realized the frame was pieced together so bad that it would not pass inspection. I got my money back with no problem. So I took my scateboard to work. At the time I worked at a gas station. This guy pulls in with a cool looking car and I ask him what it is. He says its a 67 camaro and its for sale. I didn't even know they made camaro that old. It was love at first sight. I was 16 with $1500.00 in my pocket and bought that night. 67 camaro 6 cyl. auto w/ no options. To me it was the beginning of many more to come. 16 years & 7 first gen camaros later I am restoring my "keeper car". Thank god for that car or I could of been a ford guy.

Rich69RS/SS Dec 1st, 02, 06:04 AM Mine was a 55 Chevy Bel Air hard top body for $40 bucks. I slapped a motor in it and tore up the town until a sweet 65 SS Chevelle came along . I sold it $400 bucks to some low riders. My guess is they put the torch to the springs put on a metal flake paint job with Bellflower pipes (remember those guys ?) and rabbit ears. Then painted "Slippin' into Darkness" on the rear window. To each his own I guess. Thanks Rich T.
3d cad Dec 1st, 02, 09:32 AM 1st car - 15 years old -Austin Healy sprite
2nd car - 15 years old - 61 beetle which was promptly turned into a buggy using 15 year old metal working skills (my dad was one of those guys who cannot instinctively realize that the knob on one side of a door potentially has a connection to the know on the other side so everything I learned came the hard way)
3rd car 57 210 2 door 327 300 3 on the floor (Hurst "Mystery" shifter anyone remember those dogs?)
4th - 63 beetle college car
5th - (dec 68) 67 RSSS 350 (still have it)
A guy I knew had it. He wound up under the dash in a 67 goat when it hit an earthmover on a new highway project and the car wound up at a Buick dealer I worked at on weekends.
It got traded on a Riv because to wreck screwed the guys back up so bad he couldn't deal with the Camaros ride. He street raced it a lot. It was bone stock with a 4:10 gear and ET bars. I had to take my dad with me to buy it since I was 18 at the time. During the transaction the salesman says " Oh, by the way, there are 4:10 gears in the car. The original 3:30 sets in the trunk and we will swap them back in for no extra charge."
My dad says "Well, whats the difference?". Before the salesman gets to put in his 2 cents I said "With a 3:30 gear the car gets better gas milage but will go 140. With the 4:10's it'll only get up to 105 or 110 maybe".
My dad looks at the salesguy, who didn't miss a beat, and says "Is that true?". The saleman agreed and my dad points his finger at the guy and says "We'll take the 4:10's".
$2200 changed hands and it was mine.
I could tell you the story about him coming down the steps from my bedroom with a new cam in his hand saying "What the hell is this?" but I will save it for another post.

67L48 Dec 2nd, 02, 07:25 AM Mine was a 1967 Camaro that my dad bought for himself in 1989 for $9K. It had 34,000 original miles and was advertised as a #s matching, never driven in the rain, car. Everything inside was original and in near show-room condition. The car had been repainted in original butternut yellow.
My dad bought it for himself, because he liked the color ... but he had no idea what he was actually buying. The car came with the original redline tires and wheels (it was now sporting BFG Radials and Rally Wheels w/ 68+ caps). It also came with the original trunk lid (which had also been repainted), as it was now sporting a rear spoiler. He threw the trunk lid into a land-fill and gave the wheels/tires away. http://www.camaros.net/forum/frown.gif It also had the A.I.R. system in a box (though I don't know where), original manuals and literature, protect-o-plate, et al.
It pretty much sat in our shop for 1.5 years until I finally convinced my dad to let me drive it. It was my daily driver in high school. Sat in a shop for ~7 years while I went to college and lived in VA for a couple of years.
Finally bought it from my dad this summer(NOT at market value) and drove it down to Oregon. I've now verified the #'s matching part by decoding body tag, POP, and pulling numbers off of the engine, tranny, etc.
I was one of those spoiled kids (still am, I suppose). However, I also never got any speeding tickets, never went out drinking, never got into any trouble, and pulled straight As in HS -- so, I definitely did my part to "earn" the priveledge of driving such a nice car.

Codi Dec 2nd, 02, 07:36 AM Just a week before I graduated high school, I bought a 63 Impala SS. It belonged to a guy at school. Sharpest car I ever saw. Burgandy exterior with Burgandy interior, buckets, 4 speed, 327, and cragers. We had agreed on a price of $800.00. Just days before we closed the deal, he wrecked the front clip. Needless to say, everyone at school had to tell me about it. I still bought the car for $600.00. I drove it home and my dad had a fit. He was upset I bought a wrecked car. I took the car to a local body shop for an estimate. The owner walked my to his rear lot where he had a complete clip, same color. For $250.00, he replaced my clip, painted the top of the car (sap damage), and installed two seat inserts. The car was beautiful when finished. I really enjoyed the car and found it to be a great learning experience. During my ownership, I rebuilt the 327, added a set of double hump heads(modified), a six-one barrel setup (sucked), cam, headers, etc. The usual stuff. I traded the "six pack" for a good Holly and manifold. I finally had to give the car up. It was also great at the drive in. All that back seat room. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Go69 Dec 2nd, 02, 07:53 AM My first car was at age 15, a 1963 VW Bug..
Then when I turned 16 I was given a 1969 Camaro with a 350 and a 8.5" 1979 T/A rear end with 2.56 gears..
This car was originally purchased by my brother for $800 off a local used car lot 8 years earlier. My brother gave me the car because he wanted to keep it in the family and he had a daily driver that he was using. At the time I was dating a girl whose father gave her a 1968 Camaro with manual steering & brakes and she could not drive it.. That car had a 350 and four speed.. Her father saw that I had a Camaro and offered to GIVE me the car.. I was living at home and the parents would not allow me to bring it home and park it so I had to say NO.. He sold it for like $250. I continued to drive my '69 for many years until the rust ate about every part of it.. The windshield leaked so the dash insert rusted away, along with the floor pans, and you could not put anything in the trunk because if it was heavy it would fall through..
Eventually when one of the straps that held the gas tank in gave way, I knew that things were too far out of hand. I gave the car back to my brother who did a lot of resto work on it.. The car sat for several years and then was sold to one of his buddies. Last I heard, the buddy was living in an apartment, got arrested and the car was towed off by the police. It probably went to a police auction in Miami Fl. Car was Fathom Green, A/C, deluxe white interior, non SS, 4 wheel drum car with a TH350 w/console..
I still have fond memories of that car even though I knew it would cost more than it would ever be worth to try and restore..

chicane67 Dec 2nd, 02, 11:33 AM 1967 RS L30 Camaro. Purchased it from some guy in Pacific Beach Ca who threw a bunch of parts and bolt on stuff at it.
Like it matters (LoL) it was a numbers chassis and was pretty clean. Called the guy and took Pops with me for a "Test drive"......well, after cleaning off the tires going into fourth gear and drifting a few inertsections, I was sold. Pops on the other hand was wondering how I learned to drive like that.....if he only knew.....
I took it home and found that the spare Muncie in the trunk was an M22. Built the 327 up a little more, a change here...a tweak there... and had a great ride in High School. Then on PROM day, just after installing a new clutch that day, Pops goes for a test drive and as I am adjusting my tie, I see him walking back to the house with the keys in his hand.....it had spun a main braring from the machine shop not cleaning the crank very well. I wanted to die. All the 'boys' had spent the whole week tuning and cleaning all of our cars for this day, but post phone calls we just did the Limo thing. It was better that we found other transportation...we,....uh,....well you know how Prom goes...
After a stint in the Armed Services, the car and I went to work for Dick Guldstrand/TRACO Engineering.....I used to spend hours looking through his catalog and hoping that someday I could afford his parts....what a dream come true.
....its been my continuing project till this day

Drag67Camaro Dec 2nd, 02, 12:08 PM i turned 16 in august, about a year ago my mom and i scrunched together money for my first car, not saying we r poor but not rich, so i foudn a decent 67 camaro, her boyfriend is a mechanic so he checked it out, bought it, its an SS-350, anyone want pics just email me Fixfone@aol.com , since then we beefed up the 350 and dropped a new trans in, i love that car and respect it very well because i know how rare it is to be 16 and have a nice car, so i try, try to stay in 2 digit speeds lol,
Adam
ps,,,since then my mom's bf has bought a 70 SS camaro just from seeing how fun they are, he never owned a camaro, just BB monte's and imapala's
Oramac68 Dec 2nd, 02, 06:39 PM mine is/was a 68 camaro L30/ M20, have all paperwork, 61000 miles, restored, in garage taking winter nap.
Alex_67 Dec 2nd, 02, 11:56 PM ...mine was a 1979 Volkswagen Golf with 50 hp!! after 3 month i changed to a 1981 Volvo 244, that a friend is still driving with...
Infamous Dec 3rd, 02, 01:37 AM For me it was a 1977 full size Chevy Van. The color was a god-awful brown with gold hubcaps. It was my Dads and he had saved it for me for when I started driving. When I got it, the 4 bolt main 350 and TH350 transmission had 150,000 miles on them. I tacked on an additional 50,000 miles for a total of 200,000. And I rarely changed the oil in that pig, I was an irresponsible teenager. Sometime after I graduated, I sold it to my friend Craig for $350 and he continued to drive it for a couple of years. After 235,000 miles of hard driving, the old van finally threw a rod. The engine and trans were stripped and the van was sold to the National Hot Rod Association to be used as a victim for 'Carzilla' at a tractor pull that Summer. I didn't go, but my friend Craig did and said that the van was picked up by it's jaws and dropped on it's side from about 20 feet in the air. A fitting end to a legendary van.
denverRS/SS Dec 3rd, 02, 09:44 AM 1974- my first car was a 1969 Mustang fastback with 302 auto for $650. It ran great but the chick who owned it never cleaned it. After a day of waxing and cleaning, it looked great.
1975-sold the Mustang to buy a 1968 Shelby GT500KR for $2,600. I had looked in the paper EVERY day for a Shelby and this was a great deal. My dad gave me a ride out to pick it up one very cold clear February night here in Denver. I slid into the seat and twisted the key. NOTHING http://www.camaros.net/forum/redface.gif I just handed over all my money for a car that wouldn't run! I knocked on the door and the previous owner came out (he KNEW this would happen and was getting a laugh at my panic) and got me in the car and informed me that the car wouldn't start until the tilt steering wheel was pulled into place. With the car started, my next challenge was the clutch, I had never driven a four speed before. Thank the Lord the car was pointing down a hill and I put in the clutch, let off the brake and as it started rolling, I gave it a little gas and never looked back. I drove the car every day through high school and college in every kind of Colorado weather possible. I sold it in 1982 for $8,300 to a guy from the Durango area to make the down payment on a condominium with my new wife.
Great post, thanks for all the walks down memory lane. NovaDerrick, any pictures of the red/green machine? http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Winch Dec 3rd, 02, 10:14 AM My 1st was a 52 Plymouth. Bought it in 1965 for $65. Had the weirdest transmission I've ever seen. 2 speed automatic on the column with a clutch you could use or not if you didn't want to.
kausboy Dec 3rd, 02, 10:48 AM First car was a Fiat X1/9 --I called it an "edge of towner" because that is all the farther I truseted it!! Friends all said Fiat stood for "fix it again Tom" boy was that the truth!! We all joked that the "X1/9" meant that it was 1/9th of a REAL car.
My next car was a 78 Z28 that I had for 11 wonderful years. Got me through college and one career! Gave it up for a new Corvette that I just gave up for a new Avalanche. Loved that car but a family of 4 can't take a Corvette to many places!!

zuma Dec 3rd, 02, 03:58 PM Mark, It was nice to meet you also, great car show. Maybe I'll bring mine to next years show. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif Mike... Orench, 61 VW? cool... I had a 74 squareback that I got at police auction. It was rolled, roof was caved in at the corners, no keys came with the car, had to rig a toggle switch for the ingition, and a push button to start, great on gas, but because of the roof, it leaked like crazy when it rained, had to drill some drain holes in the floor pans to let the water out. Hope your 61 was in better shape than my 74. I'm embarrassed to admit that I also owned a 75 yellow pinto, couldn't get out of it's own way!! what a POS http://www.camaros.net/forum/redface.gif

nate Dec 3rd, 02, 05:30 PM well, after reading all of these posts, i have to chime in with mine. You guys go ahead and laugh because i am the young gun of the crew http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif, but mine was a 1986 ford mustang LX w/ a 4cyl, 4 speed stick shift. Bought it for 500 bucks before i even had my license. It lasted me about 6 months before i threw a rod and sold it to the junkyard. for my second, my Camaro, it was an 88 w/2.8 litre v6 and 700r4. It was ok on the performance side, but she was a beauty. Jet black w/ silver ground effects and 3" cowl inducted hood, red and burgendy(hope i spelled it right) interior. Had the girls at school fighting each other wanting a ride home with me http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif. Anyways, it cought on fire at the parts store(still dont know why) and burned down. Saddest walk home i ever had. But i am still a member of the website, and believe me, i am gonna get my car back, come hell or high water!
It was an 84 El Camino with a V6. Got me through high school and some of my college years. It was a cool truck/car!
teSSa Dec 4th, 02, 12:57 AM i learned the basics on a 74 chevy nova, and i drived every day a 78 chevy chevette.... and i must say, for a while i was the MAN, cuz i was the only one with a car among my friends. if u know what that car looks like, i used to fit 12 people in there at times giving them rides from high school to their homes, and a little secret to u guys, it was a lot more fun when girls were involved. ahww, memories of my youth.....hehe and i'm 25 yrs old http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
No 'E' in Camaro Dec 4th, 02, 08:48 AM I know what you mean teSSa. One of my friends in high school had a Dodge Omni that we once crammed 11 people into, with people in the back seat laying down on top of each other.
I don't want to make you all jealous, but my first car was an '85 Plymouth Reliant station wagon, cream colored outside with brown vinyl interior. The typical hand-me-down from mom. It withstood about 2 years of abuse before I finally killed it. When I blew the head gasket my parents still paid $1000 to fix it despite me begging them to junk it. I used to speed everywhere in it but never got pulled over. I guess yellow station wagons don't attract much attention from cops.

Z28 Mark @home Dec 4th, 02, 05:38 PM Zumma… If you’re telling the truth, I might as well too…… I had a VW “Dunebuggy” and 2 Pintos!!!
(1 was a 73 “Runabout” and the other was a 78 wagon) All were great on gas, but the dunebuggy was a “Fiberglass Nightmare’.

69DZ302 Dec 4th, 02, 08:33 PM The first car that I owned was a 1969 Camaro that I bought in 1973 for $1,000. It was black with a black vinyl top and had a 4 speed transmission. I can't remember for sure but it had either a 327 or 350 in it. The owner had it setup for drag racing and when he finished racing it he decided to change everything back stock. I kept it a year and then decided to trade it in at a local dealership for a burnt orange with a black vinyl top 1972 Monte Carlo.

2nd car was a '68 Camaro that I "bought" off my Dad. It was a butternut yellow coupe with a black vinyl top, powered by a 327 with a column shift powerglide. Got lots of pictures of it, including my customization attempt (started putting on a full tilt fiberglass front-end on it).

Mean 69 Dec 5th, 02, 06:55 PM PLease don't kick me off of the site, but my first car was a 72 Mach 1 Mustang, with a 351 Clevland, and four speed trans, with an open rear end and really bald tires in the rear. It was a rust bucket, but ran really well. I recall doing a burnout across my entire school parking lot one day, Elgin High School, Il, 1984. Not too long afterwards, the car got wiped out on Rt. 20 in a rain storm, a POS went sideways in front of me and several other cars, I hit him and got rear'd. Totalled. Two weeks later, I bought a 72 Chevelle with a big block, which I had until two years ago.
John68SS Dec 6th, 02, 05:02 AM I mowed yards for 3 years to buy my first car in 1987 when I turned 16. A neighbor had gotten divorced and she sold me her ex's 1972 Super Sport Nova for $2000. It was originally a small block car but had a 396, a 4-speed, and 4.11's when I bought it. It topped out at about 110 mph, but man did it get there fast. I put glass-pack header mufflers on it with no tail-pipes. You could hear me comin' from miles away. My parents were not pleased, especially after I took them for a ride, he he he! It was the fastest thing at my high school, except for my auto instructor's big block '66 vette.
I kept the car until about 3 years ago when I traded it for my current Camaro project. Sometimes, when I look in the garage and see the Camaro in at least 1000 pieces, I wish I still had the Nova.
