I have a friend who is restoring a 69 RS SS 396 325hp convertible 4-speed car that is complete except for the original engine. He was wondering how to tell if the car originally came with the air pump and smog equipment. Since he wants to put it back to as original as possible.
Thanks,
Greg

Thanks. For some reason I was thinking that I had heard that air cars had it and non-air did not. Or auto cars had it and 4-speeds did not.

I know that on a 1970 396(402) L-34 with hydralic cam (not hi-reving?) they did not have smog whereas the L-78(375hp) and the LS-6 Chevelles did have smog......also another 1970 example is Z-28's having smog wheras L-48's (300hp/350) did not have smog.....Anyway I am surprised that Charley reports that low horsepower 69' 396 DID have smog.......Chuck S/Seattle

The question was in reference to (and answered by Charley) 1969 Camaros. It's fairly common knowledge that 1969 Camaros that were factory equipped with 396 motors, either 4-speed or auto, had an A.I.R. system
I have read that the only known big block cars in 1969 not to have A.I.R. were the Chevelles equipped with L35 (396ci/325hp) engines and a TH400.
