This is completely unrelated to Camaros, but I could not find any info about our problem anywhere else on the internet, so I figured I'd give you guys and gals a shot.

My mom has a 1994 Pontiac Bonneville SSE (non-supercharged 3800 Series I V6). We've been having a problem for a little while now concerning something in the EGR valve system. The Service Engine Soon light came on a while back, and the engine would run like crap. The code was for an improper EGR valve pintle position. We replaced the valve (new GM part - $130!!!) and it cured the problem. About a month later, the light came on again. We pulled the codes, and it was the same code. We replaced the valve again (thankfully under warranty), but it apparently did not fix the problem...the light still comes on frequently. The engine does not run bad at all when the light comes on now. We have pulled codes several times, and each time the only code in the computer is improper EGR valve pintle position. What could be the problem here??? It can't be the EGR valve. We are confident that the EGR valve was at fault the first time, but now the engine runs fine. Nothing seems to be wrong with the car as far as engine performance, but we keep getting the same code.

Justin,

I recently went through this sort of thing with my Bronco. I found two cracked vacuum lines and a bad solenoid, all of these were in the EGR system. Also, you could have a bad EGR position sensor if that didn't get replaced when you replaced the valve. That sensor should be easy to test if you have a vacuum pump and a multi-meter. I found all my problems simply doing the various test as described in a plain old Haynes manual. Let me know if you need a hand.

Robert,

The EGR valve in this car is operated by an electronic stepping motor, not a vacuum motor. The valve is replaced as the entire unit with the motor. The EGR position sensor is built into the valve/motor, so it is also replaced with the valve. That's why we are so puzzled.

Beyond me. No wonder that one cost 130.00. Maybe you could try one of the 4th gen sites. At least you could search their forums and might find something. I have no idea if the Chevy and Pontiac stuff is similar or not.

Anyway, good luck.

Did you clear the code after the repair?

If you have no fear, you're not going as fast as you could.

Yep, code has been cleared both by disconnecting battery and by using the scanner to clear all codes from memory.

Had a similar problem with my wifes Buick 3800. Check the wiring harness that goes over the top, front of the block for bare wires.

Have checked all the wiring in the engine compartment....all looks good. Any other ideas?

What are some of the 4th gen sites?

A co-worker had a similar problem with an S-10. After several valves and many other parts, he replace the ECM - No more problems. He bought a OBDI scanner and software to eliminate everything except the ECM.

Another idea is to check the ports under the egr valve where it flows for carbon clogging,i have seen this on many cars
Good luck
