: Moving alt. from pass to driver side

Im wanting to get aftermarket aluminum pulleys for my 69 camaro and these pulleys move the altenator to drivers side. Is the wiring harness to passenger side eliminated or do you cut and shorten the harness. What is the best, neatest looking way without having wires everywhere?

I dont have ac, so I know a standard rotation water pump will work.

Thanks,

moved mine. i think you should cut the wires to fit. remember the other wires still have to go to the lighting. im not sure but click my link and see if you can see th alt. also i changed mine to an internal regulator and removed the original regulator. i also used march pulleys and converted to the serpentine belt.

The cleanest way to do it is to use a single wire alternator. It requires a bit of rewiring, but sure makes a big improvement in the looks. Does anyone know how to move the alternator down to the lower side of the engine? In my opinion, not even a chrome alternator should be up front in your face.

No.1- your alternator should be on the passenger side on a 69 anyway. You should also have a "long" water pump. What do you have now and we will start there. Also the 1st gen. camaro's with the alternator on the drivers side had the short water pump and no accessory holes in the cylinder heads for mounting the alternator on either side ! What do you have ?

one other option, in 69 the 6 cylinder cars had the alternator on the drivers side, vs. the v-8 cars that had them on the passenger side. you may be able to pick up a used wiring harness for a 6 cyl.
my car was originally a 6 cylinder and dropped a 396 in and used the same harness. I just reworked mine going to the alternator to be able to hide it between the inner fender well and the fender. i just used the correct gauge wires and the correct colors.

Thanks for the replys. Im changing out the motor with a stronger engine. It has all the holes in the heads to accept brackets, etc. I currently have a Stewart short water pump on it. I was planning on going with Street & Performance pulleys. However these pulleys put the alt. on the drivers side. I thought maybe I could take the wires needed for the alt and just re-route or shorten them to move the alt.

John, How do you like your March pulleys? Are they underdrive? The S&P pulleys are not supposed to be underdrive which can cause charging issues etc.

I have also thought about just using a one-wire deal like Big Gear Head mentioned. However, I have been told that the one-wire alt. can be a pain. You have to constantly rev the engine, instead of wiring the alt. to charge when ignition is turned on.

More thoghts or experiences are very welcome, because I have not made up mind on exactly the best, neatest way is.

Could you wire a one-wire alt. from starter to alternator?

jay, my march pulleys are awesome! they bolt up easy look neat and clean and the polished aluminum looks nice (if you want that kind of look). the serpentine system is easy to handle and adjusment is done with one open end wrench! check out the web site for more info. john

JayBird,
I have had no problems with my one wire alternator charging. All you have to do is rev the engine one time to start it charging and from then untill you shut the engine off it will keep charging. Mine puts out about 13.8 volts at idle, but that is at 1200 RPMs. What are the S&P pulleys? I haven't heard of them before.

Big Gear Head,

The company is Street & Performance. There web site is www.tunedport.com. (http://www.tunedport.com.) They are expensive, but look nice and I've been told they are a very quality piece. Kyle Tucker with Detroit Speed uses them alot. Thanks for the reply.

Where or how did you hookup you alt?

Thanks,

I put my battery in the trunk, so all the power to my car is comming from the cable post on the starter. I ran a wire from the alternator down to the starter and it charges through the cable. I had to do quite a bit of rewiring on the radiator core suport. The horn relay had to be rewired and the original voltage regulator had to be eliminated, but it sure cleaned up a bunch of ugly wiring.
