I need to replace my lock cylinder with a new one because mine is damaged. Can you provide me the correct removal and replacement steps from the glove box door. Thanks.

I replaced one in my 69. I cant seem to remember exactly how to do it. I believe there is something you push in on the cylinder that releases it, and then you can pull it out. I know I tore the old one up getting it out, but you dont have to do that.
I wish I could be more help. I might look at it tomorrow when I get back to working on my car. If someone doesnt give you more help, maybe I can let you know more.

I'm also a little rusty on exactly how to get the lock out, but I think you basically have to disassemble the entire lock to get it out - at least that's the way I did it on mine (Maybe I did it the hard way?). If I remember, you take the screw out of the back of the lock first. Then, I think you might have to pull the latch spring out of the back with a pair of needle nose pliers and slide the latch out (I think the pivot end of the latch is inside a slot of some kind). Then, you can get the cylinder out by turning the key to the correct position (I'll be damned if I remember exactly where that position is, but I think it is the opposite direction you turn to unlock the glove box) and gently pulling the key and cylinder straight out (you have to remove the cylinder to get at the crimp that holds on the bezel). Then the bezel is all that is left holding the lock housing - it is crimped on and I think I had to loosen the crimp to get it off, and finally the housing came out.

I do remember how to replace just the cylinder though.

To replace just the cylinder you have to cut the blank tumblers on a new cylinder to fit the old key. All you have to do is insert the key in the new blank cylinder and then using a bench grinder (maybe there is some better high-tech way to do this) grind the tumblers until they are round and flush with the outside diameter of cylinder (with the key inserted of course). You can do some touch up work with a small file to remove any burs, this will make sure the lock action is smooth. Then, the new cylinder will slide into the old housing and you can reinstall the whole lock assembly.

Thanks for all the hints. It's really a bear. It doesn't seem exactly the same as your descriptions but I had enough hints to figure it out. My problem was that my key was not working anymore. Now if I can just get it back together..........

I used a 1/2" bit to drill from both ends. Got it out, but it didn't look as good as the one in the link John Z provided. maybe next time, I'll try his method http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
