Anyone heard any good or bad about FR-12, the replacement for R-12. It is supposed to be a whole lot cheaper and better that R134.

Due to the lack of answers I assume that no one has heard of this....I just heard about it yesterday when I asked about converting from R-12 to R-134. I was told that this FR-12 works better that R-134 and is comparable to the R-12 but around $8.00 a lb.

R134 is only about $5 for 14 oz. at fine establishments like Walmart. Costs about $20 to fully recharge a first Gen A/C system. Add to that a couple of bucks for the PAG oil and you should be able to recharge a system for about $25 or $30. Of course you need a new dryer for R134 which costs about $45. Don't know if you need a new dryer with FR12 or not, but if your dryer is old it probably needs to be replaced anyway.

People say you need the new double barrier hoses for R134 because the molecules of the refrigerant are smaller than R12, but others say that once the old hoses have been used and the R12 and the oil seep into the OEM hoses they won't leak if you should swap over to R134.

R134 works fine, I've recharged my system with 44 Oz of R134 and on a 95 degree days it blows 48 degree air out of the upper center vent.

Stick with the stuff you can buy at your local stores. Makes it much easier in the future to do work on the system.
