I think I am going to try to make my own cowl induction air cleaner out of a cake pan and a drop base.
How many inches wide is the original type cowl induction air cleaner?
I am guessing 16" or 17" wide since the air filter is 14" wide.
Thanks,
John

John,
On my website there are pics of Marks and my own homemade air cleaners.
Mine is 17", Marks is 16".

Thanks Carl,
You both have given me lots of information on this self made part. I found a web site that sells inexpensive aluminum cake pans up to 24" wide. They sell a 17" by 3" one for $15.

I think I am going to get the 17" but will measure my cowl hood tonight.
How deep of a pan should I start with? 3"?
By the way your car looks awsome.

Get the tallest pan you can find. 3" seems to be the tallest I could find also. The height is to the top of the pan, and since they have a rolled edge, the effective height is closer to 2 3/4". My current setup requires 3 1/4" at the back. Since the hood slopes down to the front, the smaller the housing diameter is, the less height required.
You may need to run a spacer between the carb and filter housing. A 1/2" minimum spacer is required to clear the float ajustments on Holley carbs. I don't know what the fit would be like on a Rochester.
From the looks of your engine compartment perhaps you could do a factory type setup. If the main housing is the same, all you would need is a hood seal, air cleaner top, and flapper valve parts.

CarlC,
I did think about modfying my current stock air cleaner but I have a 2 barrel carb on my car now. The stock air cleaner would need major modifications to fit on my new Edelbrock 750CFM carb.
I would also like to keep all of the original parts just in case I want to go back to stock.

I made one similar to CarlC's and Mark's. The main difference is that I fabricated the entire thing. I have prints that I could email you if you are interested. I think that I ended up with a 16.25" diameter. You will probably need a cake pan that is taller than 3" if you can find one. My air cleaner was about 3.37" tall in the very back with a 1/2" spacer on the carb. I guess that you could get a thicker spacer to go on top of the carb. Make sure that you measure everything thoroughly before you figure in your offsets and heights. Here is a link to some pics of it, http://cards.webshots.com/cp-25368180-AyNI-album/38182394akfhbj
