Thanks for the help with the valve covers DjD. They're swaped and buttoned up. I just stumbled onto this site yesterday and am thankful for the help. Would like to know who you guys are though. My Hugger orange 69 Z/28 ( it has the original drivetrain with black standard interior) is in really good shape but there ars some small things I would like to do to make it a little better. I believe the air cleaner assembly is a 350 setup, the hood won't close with cowl seal on. My question is can the extension be removed so that it will accomidate the 302 intake, and if so how do I go about it. Or do I need to get out the old checkbook for a new one

The stock 302 setup uses a shorter extension ring as compared to the 350 setup I believe. The way I like to run it is like they did the big block setup and just leave the extension ring out. Just set the sealing ring/gasket assy on top of the base and it will work fine. A side benefit is the seal will look better with the hood open as it will not be all deformed.

The problem comes from several issues such as hinge wear and the durometer of the rubber in the hood seals. You could just keep the ring in the trunk and put it on for shows (or not!)

How do I remove the extension ring?

Mark that's what I do now, carry the ring in the trunk but would like for the car to be as correct as possibe. It's a curse being a purist.

Just grab the rubber sealing ring (the metal part) and pull straight up. The extension ring fits inside the air cleaner body and the inner lip of the sealing ring fits inside the extension ring. They are just friction fits and they come apart pretty easily. The Z28 ring is about 2" tall, the 350 ring is about 3" tall.

Well, if you are a purist, you may be able to tackle this one. You will need a real NOS sealing ring (not the harder durometer service replacement they sell now)and a set of NOS hinges to make it work perfectly IMHO. There may be a difference in the air cleaner itself dimensionaly but I do not know about that. There are some cosmetic differences but I am unsure of the fitment issues. Good luck

Not sure, but I think GM seals are still available from Chevy dealer original part number is 3955231. I paid around 50 from a dealer. If not, keep your eyes peeled on ebay.

How big an air cleaner can you stuff on a small block under a cowl induction hood?

mine is a 5 inch w/ drop base(see pictures on my yahoo site), i made it so the top is level with the inner part of hood it self(not the top of the scoop, so the X-stream flow top can benefit from it, i have a wiend stealth dual plane intake with 1/2inch carb/intake spacer,
it depends on how tall the intake/ carb combo is for the air cleaner height, that and whether its a drop base or not

I could'nt quite tell from the pictures but do you have the 1 5/8" Z28 steel cowl hood?

If so then I should be OK:
