View Full Version : Magnaflow or Flowmasters?
zuma Jul 12th, 02, 01:11 PM Ok, I am stuck, should I put Magnaflows or Flowmasters 50 series 3 chambers delta mufflers on my 69 350/300hp camaro? I don't want it too loud, I'm too old for that, I just want a deep, healthy tone that I can talk over and not rattle my old teeth out. I would appreciate any opinions. Thank you in advance...Mike
gheatly Jul 12th, 02, 01:39 PM I would not go with Flowmaster if you don't want your teeth rattled. Not sure who makes the Magnaflows, but Dynomax makes good deep sounding mufflers that aren't loud.
xodus921 Jul 12th, 02, 03:10 PM I just fired my engine up with those flowmasters on it...I was really shocked at how loud it is...I thought these were the quiter ones. Loud is not a bad thing for me, But they are alot louder then I expected.

GARY LINDEMAN Jul 12th, 02, 04:56 PM Hey! I am 50 this month restoring my first Z28 (that I could not afford when I was 17).
I am putting on chambered exhaust system! Is that too old for loud?
rs1968ss Jul 12th, 02, 05:08 PM I put the Magnaflows on mine and am happy. With the big block and headers I get a nice rumble at idle. They REALLY wake up when you get on it however!

Don't worry, soon you'll go deaf and the noise won't bother you anymore. I like mine because now I have an excuse for ignoring the wife - Here's a typical conversation: What? WHAT? - you say you're going to take the trash out and clean the garage for me!? THANKS! WHAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOOOUUUU . . . the Camaro is running . . . GUESS IT WILL HAVE TO WAIT TIL I GET BACK FROM THE TRACK

bspears Jul 13th, 02, 12:08 PM Magnaflow vs Flowmaster
I had the same problem. I have a 69 conv with a 350 mild cam (and stock exhaust manifolds) I went with the Magnaflows (with 2.25 pipe) and I am very happy. Nice and quiet at idle and cruise with a deep throaty rumble at WOT. I am sure I made the right choice.
cheers and good luck

zuma Jul 13th, 02, 02:39 PM Thanks for the replies, everyone! Bob, I liked your response, I think I'll go with Magna's, The muffler shop said that if I didn't like the Magna's He'll change them out to flows...No charge!! what a deal! thanks again and I'll let you know how they sound. Mike
Joe Harrison Jul 14th, 02, 09:09 AM I love my flowmasters, I love the sound, I love the noise level. My wife says she would kill me if I put quiter exhaust on it.........she loves them too!!
ORENCH Jul 14th, 02, 12:47 PM If sometime in the far future I get tired of the Flowmanter's sound, then I'll switch to another more civilized muffler. Until that happens, I'm letting everybody on the road now a V8 is comming their way. http://www.ethanwiner.com/Smileys/Flame%20Thrower.gif

CamaroNOTcamero Jul 14th, 02, 01:36 PM I personally dont like the way they sound, becuase i can always tell when someone has them.
I dont want to pass another car with gear heads in it and have them say ....Flowmasters.
Your choice, personally i'm going for straighline performance "street mufflers" becuase i've heard they dont resonate, and they arent very loud. I want my car to sound good not make me deaf.
67electro Jul 14th, 02, 02:32 PM I got the American Thunder kit from Flow master, it has the crossover pipe, and the exhaust has a smoother deep tone that sounds much better then my family's hot rods with turbo mufflers. They just sound loud and choppy. I am happy with my interior noise level, you can have a conversation without yelling, the wind noise is louder then the exhaust, but when you get on em, it sounds really good. RockyMtnRacer Jul 14th, 02, 06:50 PM I started with Magnaflows and swapped to Dynomax's. Both sound great but the Magnaflows were a little too loud for me. The Magnaflows were also quite a bit more expensive up front. I would have spent a lot less to just put on the Dynomax mufflers the first time around.

Winch Jul 15th, 02, 02:34 AM I keep reading on this and wonder what options I really have. I have a 68 ragtop with a new 350. I have the American Thunder with Flowmaster Delta 40s sitting in a box ready to go on. I posted a question several months ago about whether I could even use the Delta 50s and most responses were that they wouldn't fit. I wonder if those Dynomax will fit with my AT 2 1/2" system.
Spames Jul 15th, 02, 03:04 AM Winch-
Try out what you have first. I have the same thing, and it can be loud outside the car, but I was shocked how quiet it is on the inside.

ORENCH Jul 15th, 02, 06:46 AM Mine isn't too noisy inside, I think a lot of people leave the exhaust system without the tailpipes, and that is the reason of their complaints. When I first drove my car it had standard mufflers that ended right under the rear seat and my wife told me she couldn't resist the noise, now she hadn't complained about the Flowmasters sound. Also the appropriate interior parts and materials help reduce the exterior noises to an aceptable level. Good luck on your decision. http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif

no bail4u Jul 15th, 02, 07:39 PM Mike, I have a '67 rs 327/275. I am running the Flowmaster 40's, 2-1/4 aluminized, H-pipe, the H-pipe really mellowed the overall tone. And the system exits just behind the rear wheel wells pointing down. I get compliments of how nice she sounds at idle and at cruisin' speeds. When I accelerate she sounds awesome! The sound level inside is very tolerable...for my taste. By the way, I'm 46 and still build my cars as I did in '73. Huge "Purple Hornies" were the rave muffler back then! In other words, You either like to hear your horsepower or you like the sleeper type...The car reflects your personality. Dan.
Robert Stacho Jul 16th, 02, 02:48 AM Mike,
First of all IMO the sound you can expect from your car is a function of a lot of things...none the least of which is the compression of your motor. An 11:1 motor will sound different than a 9:1 motor with an equal exhaust system. Obviously the hardware (pipes, mufflers, and headers...size and length) will then impact additionally. My neighbor had a stock compression 468 in a 69 Camaro with headers, single Flowmaster tucked up behind the back seat, and a full exhaust system. His sounded very good and was not really loud as compared to my 68 RSZ28 with the 11:1 302 motor with the same basic exhaust system. I consistently get comments about the sound (loudness) of my car.
Now to your question. I have the short style Stainless Steel Magnaflows on my 67SS Chevelle. It has an all together different sound than the Flowmaster muffler. I have 2.5" headers into 3" pipes through the mufflers into a 2.5" tail pipes that exit past the rear bumper. The Magnaflows in my set up has a nice deep throaty sound at idle and cruize speeds and a very loud crisp raspy sound at WOT. The Magnaflows are not very popular in my neck of the woods as compared to the Flowmasters as they are (or at least, were) sold exclusively through muffler shops and many guys like to do their own systems.
I like both sounds (Flowmasters or Magnaflows) but based on what you appear to be looking for ("deep healthy tone"), Magnaflows will probably do the trick better than Flowmasters which always seem to have a higher pitched tinnier sound no matter what the set-up is.
Just my $.02

zuma Jul 16th, 02, 01:10 PM OK everyone, I just got back from the muffler shop, 2.25 exhaust with a crossover and stainless Magnaflows were my choice: nice suttle healthy tone at idle and good low tone at WOT... Russ at Exhaust Outlets did a great job! Just by chance in his shop was a 69 RSSS Z11 pacecar that was in the process of a frameoff resto, It only had, I believe, 64k miles on it, what a nice machine, Also in his shop was a 66 chevelle, 72 GMC 4X4, 71 cutless conv., 70 GTX Prostreet, and a 68 RS conv. It was more like a car show than a muffler shop. Just thought I would add that in. Thanks again for all your opinions. Mike http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
Jeremiah Jul 20th, 02, 07:57 PM I just bought the Flowmaster # 17104 American Thunder system with the transverse style muffler. It uses all original mounting locations and has an original appearance to an extent. I have not installed it yet but I dont think it will be near as loud as the #17139 set up. The exshaust pulses should cancel each other out with the single muffler. Im not saying it will be quiet just not as loud as the #17139 set up. Both set ups are American Thunder but one uses the single muffler. I will keep you posted and let you know how it sounds.
RickD Jul 21st, 02, 01:52 AM I believe the transverse muffler is two 40 series welded together. Basically, two mufflers that look like one.
