HI
I am in the process of detailing my 396 with chrome valve covers, alternator, etc and am thinking of changing to a chrome water pump
Are there any disadvantages to using a chromed one, such as poorer performance of the pump or running hotter ?

They leak at the gasket surface(s) and chrome rusts.

File off the chrome plating at the gasket surfaces and clear coat or wax the snot out of it.

Not really, but with some of the aftermarket pumps, the pulleys don't line up that well, and the accessories may not bolt on exactly the same way.

I've been using a chrome pump (SB) on my 70 for about 15 years with no problems. (The same one).

On my 67, I'm using a polished aluminum high-flow pump from Summit with great results.

Oh yeah, like Everett said, remove the chrome from sealing surfaces.

Nothing wrong with chrome pumps but I do prefer the TuffStuff high performance series that are chrome. The best looking pumps period and very high quality for the money.

The Summit polished pump that is mentioned above by Don is made by TuffStuff under brandlabel agreements I am sure.

I have two other possibilities.

1) Get an aluminum pump and polish it (or buy one already polished) and coat it with something. POR Glisten PC or a clear powder coat. Eastwood might have a product as well.

2) Powder coat the stock pump with the "argent" color. It is supposed to look similar to chrome. I have never seen it in person, though. This would be the cheapest route.
