VERY few original production fasteners were ever supplied to Service with their original coatings; most production bolts were "phosphate & oil", which are essentially dark gray-to-black in color, and surface-rusted pretty easily when exposed to moisture. This didn't matter in an assembly plant, as they were used up in a hurry and replaced with fresh stock daily. Fasteners stocked by Service usually had different coatings so they wouldn't rust in warehouse bin storage. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

so john, what your saying is that service stock from GM could be a different color because of the coating they use to keep them from rusting even in the GM plastic bags?? and the bolts used on the cars from the factory are most probably all black phosphate..........rht????

so........if you were going to put the right color bolts on your baby......what would you do here?......light grey or black???
thanks

I wouldn't worry too much about it - what's important is the correct length and strength rating. Most engine dress bolts were either dark gray/black phosphate, black oxide, or zinc-plated. Other than Jerry MacNeish's books, I'm not familiar with any source that precisely identifies all the original underhood fastener finishes. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
