I have a 1968 SS. I am putting a 496cui BBC in it. I used roller rockers and tall valve covers. I need a hood with 4" extra clearance. The easy way is a 4" fiberglass cowl hood. The trick is, I want to keep the SS hood louvers. Has anyone ever seen an SS hood with 4" raise or a 4" cowl with inserts for the SS louvers? Do you think a stock SS hood can be raised 4" by adding sheetmetal and turn out being a very nice job? Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Matt

I'm sure you can cut in for the ss louvers. You would just need to set them closer together than the stock location. I would make up a mock up out of cardboard, or wood or something, and paint it up. Then place them in different areas until you find what looks best.
As for modifying a stock hood, they have a tendancy to crack at the mating point. If it were me, I would use the fiberglass hood. You might talk to the manufacturer...they might form in the locations for the louvers for a little extra cash. might be money well spent.

personally, i don't think the SS louvers would look "right" on a cowl induction-type hood. in my opinion, it would look kinda cheesy.
perhaps you can do some photo editing on the computer and see what a Camaro looks like with the lovers on a raised hood.
