John Ward Aug 19th, 03, 04:54 PM I have just purchased a 1969 SS/RS but taking a closer look I see the linkage hook up on the steering column under the hood, is that correct? it has a four speed, 12 bolt and disc breaks on the front as well as a 350

Unreal Aug 19th, 03, 07:30 PM John, Welcome.
The linkage you refer to is probably the reverse lock out linkage. It connected the reverse lever on the shifter to the column linkage, through a bell crank on the frame. It's purpose was to require the tranny to be in reverse before allowing the key to be removed. Often times, the linkage is removed and not replaced during repairs/restoration. I believe it also controls the back up lights.
John Ward Aug 20th, 03, 03:18 AM Thank allot! I just bought the car and know nothing about camaro's but, I do know Chevy drive trains. I want to restore the car correctly back to a SS/RS 350.
It presently has z-28 emblems, z-28 intake, z-28 carb, z-28 dist., z-28 hood, z-28 air cleaner assy., z-28 center console. It is a really clean car it has a little surface rust in the trunk and one spot on a fender. The frame, pans, bushings, rear quarters are perfect. It was stored for over 20 years in a warehouse and has 19K miles

dougrmac Aug 20th, 03, 04:25 AM John, welcome to the website. You will find that the people who frequent this site are very knowlegable about many aspects of the 1st gen Camaro. Don't be afraid to search or ask questions about anything!! What part of MD are you from?
Unreal Aug 20th, 03, 04:40 AM John, That's a lot of Z parts for an SS! What led you to the conclusion that it was an SS350 rather than a Z/28? Why don't you post the VIN and the cowl tag info over on our "Tag Team" section. You might get a nice surprize. Get whatever you can off the motor, especially the numbers on the pad just forward of the Passenger side head. You mentioned Z carb...does that mean a 4053 List Holley? SS350 used Rochester. Check your fuel lines. Evidence of double lines (one feed and one vapor return) would indicate Non-Z/28. Back when this car was last touched, I doubt someone who made changes would go to the trouble to put the single line clips on the car, so it would probably have dual line "gull wing" clips.
Oh, I just thought of another thing! RS Z's had "Rally Sport" emblems on the rear portion of the fenders, just forward of the doors and Z/28 near the nose. SS350 had "SS" at the rear of the fender, and "350" at the nose.
Post any info in Tag Team, and we can help you with your investigation.
John Ward Aug 21st, 03, 03:13 AM The carb is a chevy pn 3959164-GE or DE
List 4346
the engine numbers on the front tag are
V141TDS
C8F441305 or 6
It runs really good, got the tags last night and drove it to my shop to change the fluids and check her out more it has a little oil leak from the plate behind the fuel pump but that is it and the under carrage looks like a new car there is no under coating as well also no rust (that is good) the bushings are a little cracked looking from age (sat 20 years in a wearhouse) it drives like a new car very tight and the shifter is tight as well no noises from the trans either. The emergency break cables are froze up though so I will replace them with stainless ones and restore the backing plates, shoes, springs and front pads. While under the car I found the vent line from the fuel tank but it is open to the air with a rubber hose on it is there supose to be a charcoal canister some where?
John
Unreal Aug 22nd, 03, 04:35 PM 4346 is a COPO or L 78 carb. Not sure of the difference between the 4053 and 4346, but I think it is just the jets.
The vent should return to the gas tank. No canister in 69.
Sounds like a great car.
