What the difference? The GM tank is almost twice the price. I am inclined to buy GM where i can, but is it worth it?

When I purchased mine I had the option of the GM or reproduction. I chose the reproduction because it was less than half the price. The salesman told me there was no difference in them. The reproduction was built in Canada and is identical to the GM tank. Mine was purchased from National Parts Depot.

The GM tank will not impress you. They are shipped around through the GM system without a box. The repro is great. No way would I buy a GM tank today.

-Mark. I agree. They're are scratched to death; couldn't figure out why until I read the above. The reproduction looks MUCH nicer, one of the few things I prefer in reproduction over original GM.

I'm very happy with the repro. The only thing I noticed is that the filler neck is about a 1/4" higher than the old stock one at the opening which would only take a degree or two extra on the bend to occur. No big deal. I shimmed the tank down to center the neck in the filler opening behind the license plate.

I'm told you can stick a broomstick in the neck, and bend it down a little. Haven't done mine yet, as I was waiting to see how a gas nozzle fits. so far, I've been putting gas in 2 gallons at a time from my lawn mower can. (No, not lawn mower gas....I've been putting 94 octane in the car.)

I used the broom stick method with no problems, just dont get wild when doing it, Bends pretty easy. I also bought a GM tank and it looked like it was drug behind the GM delivery truck. I ended up unloading it and buying a repo tank

I contacted Spectra Premium http://www.spectrapremium.com/ when I purchased my tank because the neck was a little high. They told me to simply bend it down. I used a 2" wide belt and put it around the neck then stepped on the belt until I bent it down far enough (about 1 1/2") no problem, no leaks. The GM tank uses a thicker gauge metal and when you hold them (one in each hand) the GM tank is noticeably heavier and the galvanizing is better. I chose the Spectra tank because as mentioned above, It's shipped in a box and is in beautiful condition as it comes out of the box. The galvanizing is no big deal because these cars will never again see the use they endured when they were just cars.

There are several makers of Repo Tanks and at least one is terrible looking so if you order a repo make sure you tell them you want something that looks like orig.

Rick It's pretty funny.

The Power King tractor I have wasn't running to well. Solution.... 4 gallons of 114. Man does it run better now. You get that racing gas smell to boot. :D Just can't understand the black lines on the lawn now.

Mr69...Go repo. Make sure it's made in Canada.

My repro tank from Classic Ind. looked pretty much identical to the GM except for thinner guage metal. The repro tanks work well for EFI setups as they're cheap enough that you can cut them without it breaking your wallet. I cut a 5" X 6" hole in the top, and inserted baffles into the tank required for EFI. I had a good muffler shop weld them in, and weld steel over the hole on top. Once it's painted and installed no one will ever know ;) ... A lot nicer than hangin a sump off of the tank, and a LOT cheaper than a Rock Valley tank.

I was very impressed wiht the repro. I installed the Canadian made tank in the 69 two and a half years ago. No problems with the filler neck. I put in a new sending unit and then clear coated the whole thing and the straps before I installed it. So, even the zinc coating isn't exposed to the air. The car never sees the rain or snow so it should last a long long time.
