I have a Muncie 4-speed M21 that I need to replace the steel speedo driving gear (ring) pressed on inside the tailshaft. I ordered a full set of gears from Rick's but they were all plastic. The catalogs I've checked only show a steel gear on the TH-400's and plastic ones for the 3-4 speeds. So what do I have? Is there more that one size steel gear?
Thank's for your input...Jeff

Muncies also used two different steel gears. If memory serves me they were a 8 and 9 tooth gears. I have the part numbers at home (not there right now) I can send them to you with a chart to determine the correct gears for your rear end ratio and tire size if you wish. Just e-mail me and let me know.

Jim,
Thank you for your reply. I would greatly appreciate the info you have on the gear selecton. I will email you after this post.
One more question please, How would you determine how far to press the ring on the shaft for correct gear alignment?
Thanks again...Jeff

I have always placed the center line of the drive gear directly in the center of the hole in the case that the driven gear goes into. I think the factory location is slightly to the rear of this location, but I have never had a problem placing it in the center. I will check my messages Monday and try to get the info out to you asap. If the output shaft has a 1/4" deep blind hole in it near this location, the original gear was plastic and the hole is for the retaining clip. If there is no hole in the shaft the gear was steel.

I'm not sure if every Muncie is like this, but the M20s and M21 Muncies I have seen have plastic ones that are held on by a clip. My 69 M20 has the natural color plastic Drive gear. There is an exploded pic of a Muncie floating around here. Are there different tail shafts?

I guess Jim just answered my question graemlins/clonk.gif while I was typing it. :D
