View Full Version : 69 Z28 Distibutor Point Shields
rszmjt Dec 10th, 03, 04:45 PM Hello, I was wondering if the 69 Z28 used the metal shields in the distributor that clip togeather and shield the points and condensor. I have a 6,000 mile 70 Z28 LT1 Motor and it has them. I also have a set that i got in a box of parts with my 69 Z28, but it has been 29+ years and i can not honestly say that they came out of my 69 Distributor. 1 of the shields says on the inside on a small tag- Reduces ignition Interferance in vehicle radio. To replace contact set for adequate clearance use 1966294 (D112P )as specified. See Delco Remy bulletin 6724. I checked the point number and it does come up for a 69 Z28. Thanks in advance.
elcamino72 Dec 10th, 03, 06:52 PM I just did a search for D112P over on AC Delco's website and it didn't come back as valid. The GM number does not look to be valid any longer either.
rszmjt Dec 10th, 03, 07:57 PM The 1966294 number comes up in my old GM parts book dated Sept/75 , showing that this point set fits 1111266 distributor (67 302), 1111467 ( 68 302 ),1111170 ( 67/68 -396/375 HP ), 1111480 ( 69 302 ) & 1111499 ( 69 396/375 HP ). I am guessing that this shield is indeed off of my 302.
Vintage 68 Dec 10th, 03, 08:41 PM The #1966294 is the replacement HP Point Set for the cars you listed. This smaller point set without the HD Screw Terminals was required to clear the Radio Noise Shields if installed. I don't remember which of these cars came with the shields from the factory, but I don't remember seeing them on many Z-28s. After the first tune-up I'm sure they were tossed if they were there to begin with.
I believe the original non-shielded HP distributors used D106HP or D106PS point sets.
I may have a better listing of older distributors in the shop - I'll try to remember to look next time I'm out there (Cold and rainy right now).
William Dec 11th, 03, 04:54 AM It is my recollection the shield was introduced in the '70 model year. There is no mention of it in the '69 shop manual; it is pictured in the '70.
Since the '69 Camaro was produced into the '70 model year it raises a question. A few very late Z/28s have a distributor not listed anywhere in service publications. Maybe that's the difference.
dyno jonn Dec 11th, 03, 08:22 AM Shield was used in 70, not in 69. The D112P has a stiffer spring for high RPM, the D106HP has larger contacts and is for "heavy duty" use (whatever that is) not for high RPM Corvette and Z28 use. The shields were to cut down on radio interference with the High Tech [ graemlins/sad.gif POS] windshield antennas that came out in 70.
Vintage 68 Dec 11th, 03, 01:05 PM The D106HP points did have a larger (moving) contact pad. the fixed (base) contact pad was the same diameter but it had a hole in the center to prevent "air-bonce" at high RPM. The contact point faces were plated with Platinum to prevent pitting and increase service life in "HD" applications. Lots of truck parts went racing back in the day!
These points used with the High RPM Profile Cam (as used in the Z-28 distributors) were good to over 8,000RPM with no Spark Scatter. This was a Old School racing set-up with single points.
The D106PS point set was a litter duty set that had screw terminals vs the friction method of wire retention. This set was for trucks and other HD or off highway (as in construction) uses to prevent the wire contacts from causing problems.
clill Dec 11th, 03, 02:36 PM William...I have one of those 1112003 Distributors that is dated 9 G 11.

William Dec 11th, 03, 06:18 PM Clill, does it have the shield and do you know where it came from?
clill Dec 11th, 03, 06:31 PM No shield. I don't remember where I got it. It does have a second wire coming out of the bottom though.
davidpozzi Dec 12th, 03, 11:15 AM I bought a 70 Z/28 distibutor for my Camaro back in 1970. The dealer didn't have the distributor on hand but had a complete crate engine for a Z/28, so he pulled the dist on it and sold it to me.
It had the shields in it as I recall.
I messed with a fiew Z/28's back when they were pretty new, don't recall the shields in them. I used to install advance curve kits for friends. We had a Camaro club going in the early 70's and I was the president of it for a year.
I still have a set of D112p points in the little "can" with the pull string! There is a metal top and bottom with cardboard around the middle, you pull the string to unseal it.
