The 69 camaro i got was and has been a show car sence its restore and now that i drive the car the paint on the engine is cracking and flaking off. Im going to remove the engine to repaint it but how do i go about removing the cracked paint from the motor? Also what is the best way to mask off a built motor like this. It has aluminum valve covers and chrome oil pan so i guess those have to come off. Any tips to make this easier would be nice.
Thanks
Mike

Mike,
Oven cleaner will remove the old paint but be careful that stuff will burn your skin.I would tape off the pan and covers unless you just want to replace the gaskets whyle they are off.Take your time and remember preparation is everything.

Oven cleaner. LOL I did not know it would remove paint but i guess it will. When i was younger i was told to use it on my motocross bike to get the grease from around the head pipe and it did that and also etched the aluminum or something. I was somewhat ticked because my engine was white colored. LOL I plan to remove everything from the motor that is not getting painted i guess. That will include the pan, valve covers, intake and water pump. I want it to be nice enough to go back in this car which is very nice.

I did this recently with the engine ou of the car. I bought a couple cans of aircraft stripper in a spray can, oven cleaner should work too if your engine was painted with spray bombs.Got it all stripped, its real messy and watch the stripper on rubber like the balancer and gaskets. Then i went around the block with a wire wheel on a drill and cleaned it up.Then i dusted coat of self etch prime, then primed it with epoxy, then hugger orange single stage urethane.Do it this way if you want a finish that will last,It will take a while but it came out great.Heres a few pictures of it here (http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/ochrisl/album?.dir=/Camaro+68)
