I am going to purchase an autogear M22, and was wondering, is the tailshaft OD is the same regardless if its a 27 spline or 32 Spline? I assume they are the same but need to know if my Competition plus shifter is going to mount the same as my original M20 with a 27 spline output.

thanks for any info....

bowtieusa, The early tail is 2 7/8" o.d. , the late is 3 1/16" o.d. The center to center measurements are different for the mounting holes on the side of the tail for early and late. I have a custom mounting plate for comp+ to fit the late tail in a 1969 F-body...Hope this helps... Crash

sorry, I should clarify myself.

The hurst comp plus shifter I have, has a U bolt that goes around the tailshaft HOUSING in the rear. are the 32 spline tailshaft housings the same diameter as the 27 spline tailshaft housings?

thank you!

Bowtieusa,

As Crash indicated in the post, the early tail @ 2-7/8 outside diameter is the 27 spline output. The newer 32 spline output is 3-1/16 outside diameter. These are the dimensions at the very back of the tail where your mounting bracket seats and the U-bolt goes around. I too have customized that very same bracket you have to fit the larger tail. But as he also stated the two tails are dimensionally different in length and shifter mounting points. So be careful if you fab a bracket, as Im sure you want it to come through the floor board in the correct location and possibly in to a console. Hope this clears it up for you. graemlins/beers.gif
