View Full Version : auto to 4spd swap - trans and shifter mock up (pics)
MY FIRST 69 Jun 23rd, 04, 07:58 PM Most of you know that I am switching from an auto to a 4 speed. Today I got brave and bolted my scatter shield and muncie to a junk 350 block and cut the hole in the floor for the hurst comp plus shifter. I dont have the exact location of the hole, but you can get a good idea from the pics. I layed the block on its front (timing cover down) and bolted the scatter shield to it, then placed the tans on it like a tower. I then layed it down on the gound and slid it in to the frame. My new motor mounts lined up the first time and the bolts slid right in. I then jacked the tail of the trans up until it made a nice dent in the floor. I started cutting little by little until I could go through all the gears. I used the chrome trim ring as a guide for cutting the hole. It turned out so well that I even dug out my old seat just so I could see how it feels to grip the shifter. I hope to have the car finished soon.

HwyStarJoe Jun 24th, 04, 03:49 AM Looks good to me Justin!
But I'd knock that chunk of dirt off that cylinder before I fire'd her up. ;)
rojo Jun 24th, 04, 03:54 AM hehe, that front main cap looks a little loose to me, might spin a bearing, whoops... no bearing.
Ditto.. the cut looks good.
68SSCamaroinKS Jun 24th, 04, 04:17 AM You have some really nice block modifications there. Cob webs mixed nicely with grass, mud in the water jackets. I wouldn't even paint it, just put some heads on and go! Oh, and as for the bearings I think you have the right idea. Bearings are nothing more than resistance resulting in loss of power, you don't really need em'. hehe
No really, nice work in getting your hole cut. Looks great!
Blue69 Jun 24th, 04, 03:21 PM Looking good so far! I think the dirt and cobwebs on the block give it a nice casual look, anybody can make chrome and shiny paint look good, right?
I noticed you are using the later model muncie with large turbo 400 style output shaft correct? Just wondering where you got the shifter mount. I have same trans in my 69 and had to fab one to fit. Wish I had seen this sooner, might have saved me the trouble.
MY FIRST 69 Jun 24th, 04, 07:29 PM It is an early tail shaft with 27 splines. The shifter might look funny because it is a 68 hurst shifter and install kit. I had to use a 68 shifter because my trans was originaly out of a 66 pontiac with a driver side speedo. I bougt a used tail off of ebay and found out it was from a 68. From what I know the 69 and later muncies used bolts to hold the shifter arms in place. I have studs on mine.
Blue69 Jun 25th, 04, 05:30 PM My mistake, for some reason I thought it was the larger shaft, maybe it was the clamp around the housing that threw me off. graemlins/clonk.gif I guess I could have just counted the splines with the clear pictures you posted. Guess I was just looking for an alternative to the mount I have now. Nice flip-flops by the way.
MY FIRST 69 Jun 26th, 04, 12:31 AM yeah, those feet belong to my cousin. I asked him to help me with the project, so he showed up wearing a white tee shirt and flip flops graemlins/sad.gif
