Anyone know the best place to buy a new or used posi unit. My parts man at the Chevy dealer said he could get me a new Eaton at 10% over his cost. I think he said his cost was aroung $300, so $330 + tax. This is for an 8.5 rear.
Any cheaper out there?

Checked back with my Chevy parts man for a definite price, he called me back with $350 + 10%+ 7.5% tax. That adds up to $413.
Big Gear Head, if I decide to go that route I'll contact you. I am not in a hurry just yet, so I'm going to try and find a posi on the used market. I see'm every once and a while for around $100.
Later,
Guy

Just want to jump in and ask, Im going to build my 10 bolt 8.2 real soon. who makes a better posi unit, eaton or auburn. I heard eaton are very loud on the road, and that auburns are nice but you cant put slicks to them. which way should i go?

I have the new version Eaton posi for the 8.2 (purchased from big gear head). It works flawlessly and makes no noise. It applies the power to the ground evenly (judging from the black marks :D ). I've never owned an Auburn so no opinion on that one.

I have the new Eaton posi in my 8.2 and have no noise or problems. The eaton is a clutch type that can be rebuilt the Auburn is cone type that cant be rebuilt.I looked at used omes but for the difference in price I bought new that way you only have to put it in once.If you are going to pay someone to install it get a new one.

The Eaton is better than the Auburn. I have had to replace some worn out Auburn units and there was a large amount of powdered metal in the bottom of the housing. This junk ran through the bearings and most of them had to be replaced. I recommend using epoxy to stick a ceramic magnet to the inside of the cover at the bottom to catch most of the metal that gets loose inside the rear end.

I've had both Eaton and Auburn. The Auburn was alright but the Eaton kicks butt. The Eaton I have installed is not noisy at all.Get a magazine like Super Chevy or any car magazine and look for the ad from Randy's Ring and Pinion. Call them , their prices are pretty reasonable. They sold me my Eaton around $350.

I'm looking at upgrading my 8.2 in the near future as well. I originally wanted to buy a brand new 12 bolt from Moser or Currie, but they are a little to expensive for me right now. I was looking at the Eaton unit and installing Moser axles for my 8.2.

Big Gear Head,
What type of gears do you recommend, Richmond etc? Also if you don't mind me asking, how much for the moser axles and gears? Also, should this combo stand up to about 425 hp?

I have installed about every brand of gear currently made and I haven't seen a lot of difference in any of them. I install more US Gear and Motive Gear than any others. I have heard the complaints about Richmond being noisy, but I haven't had this experience myself. The new Eaton posi is $348 and Moser axles are $258. The price of the gear depends on the ratio. For some reason the 3.55 is higher than the 3.73 and 4.10. I have a N.O.S. GM 3.55 here for $210. Many people prefer the GM gears when they are available. I can get you a US Gear or Motive Gear 3.73 for about $170.
