Hi, im installing a LT1+T56 in my Camaro soon, but i think i might be getting the wrong gearbox, the lt1 is from a 95 corvette, but the 6 speed is from a 91 Corvette, when did the first t56 get installed in vettes?

The only T56 that came in a Corvette is the transaxle version that comes in the Gen 5 Corvettes. The transaxle version is very different from the T56 that came in the Camaro, and is not easily adapted to a bellhousing mount.

1991 Corvettes came with the ZF six speed transmission. This tranmission is not too popular here in the US because repair parts are very scarce and VERY expensive. However, I've heard that the situation in Europe may be different, and that parts may not be a problem.

I'd check on part availablity before buying one of the ZF six speeds. If you do buy it, make sure you get the tranmission with the bellhousing, because the bellhousing for the ZF is unlike anything else Chevy has ever used.

Ok, thanks for the reply, I think it might be a bit more hassle to install the ZF tranny into my Camaro 67 to? Do anyone know if the zf transmission is as strong as the t56?

im a bit confused to, is richmond the same as zf?

The ZF is not the same as a Richmond.

Take a look at this article. It may be helpful.

i thought all the Corvettes with a 6 speed built after the death of the ZR1 (1995?) had the T56 in them, to save a few bucks. i seem to recall that the 1996 Corvette GS with the LT4 got a T56, but i could very well be mistaken on that. now that i think about it, that would only put the T56 in the old body style Vette for the 1996 model year, as the 97 got totally re-done with the T56 transaxle setup.

The ZF is pretty much used here in Europe by the Italian automakers. Many of the italian fullbloods use them, ZF is also a big supplier to the European truck/bus manufacturers, so there is a service organisation here that can supply spareparts.

How ever I think that the T-56 is easier to install. Especially if you use those aftermarket boxes that fit to an old "Muncie"-type bellhousing. There is also the matter of getting the Speedometer to work in your 1 gen car. For the T-56 there is conversion kits that fixes this.

The article mentioned earlier in this thread says that you must have all the parts from the Corvette, bellhousing, clutch, hydraulics for the cluth if you go with the ZF. It could also be a little bulkier than the T-56 (which is bulky too).

Strenghtwise I don't think that there is a difference, they are as I said used by many Hi-Powered cars, the Tomaso Pantera is one example of a ZF-equipped car.

will the 1990 corvette 6 speed zf box bolt straight on to the 1995 corvette LT1 engine?
