I've always liked to stir my own gears... with all that torque, I'd use one of those new aftermarket M22's.

Something bother's me about the FAQ's on both the 700 and 200 trannies over on that sight.

I tried to keep a thread alive for a long time where somebody was trying VERY hard to get a 700 tranny to live behind a big motor and I don't think it was in a 10 second - FLAT - ride AND didn't get it done!!!

But, the real Art Carr say's he can do it using a 200 as does Bruce!!

Therefore, I doubt if a 700 is the tranny to try to use IF you are going to abuse a 550hp BB motor in a 3000 and heavier car!!!

Please correct me if I am all wet so that I can be kept up-to-date on this stuff b/c when I knock my M-20 out of my car, I will have to bite the bullet and go with either a BIG 600 Tremac OR a 200!! OR the high-dollar Super-cased M-22 with all the bells and whistles...

Or a Turbo 350 or 400 with a Gear Vendors overdrive. Thats what Im leaning towards, I think its not far off price wise by the time you get a overdrive trans that will stand the abuse.

A 2-speed power glide definately will handle that kind of power and torque. Next would be the THM400 3-speed. Next would be the 200-4R 4-speed overdrive specifically built to handle the power / torque. Another option would be the 4L80E which is GM's heavy duty version. But you will need a control box and might have to open up the tunnel a bit to make it fit. It's pretty expensive though, but may be within the range of a properly built 200-4R.

I'd avoid the 700-R4 in your case. For the money it would take to get the 700-R4 to handle that kind of power, you would be much happier with the 200-4R. The THM-350 also would be overshadowed by the THM-400.

As much as I like automatics, I'd encourage you to consider a modern manual overdrive. With that kind of power and torque, you'll appreciate the control and feel of a manual gearbox.

Well, JW does have a case and Ultra Bell setup...for the Glide, not the TH-400. You have to cut off the front of an OEM TH case and use an Ultra Bell. Not really needed IMO for what he will run with that motor and car. I would however recommend a TH-400 as the trans of choice in this case. You can get into a pretty decent trans and converter for far less than $2K as well...... ;)

hey budW - I'm partial to rowing my own canoe as JimM - You make consider a TKO-600 or Richmond 6 Speed. My cusin (Bob Igleasias) work at Valaya racing (www.valayaracing.com). They've got reworked 6speeds living behind 900HP normally aspirated Vipers - The viper he just did is on the cover of Viper Magazine - check out this link - Viper on the cover is the one! http://www.vipermagazine.com/backissues/backissues.html

Nick

Your question - as far as autos go - 4L80E would be my choice - bute strength of the TH400 w\ over drive... I cant see spending the money on a 200R4 or 700R4...IMHO - I actually looked into a Gear Vendor - It's a little pricey at about $2300 for just the over drive...

The only downside to the 4L80E is that you will need the electronics to shift the trans and such. I have had good feedback on the TCI stand-alone controls.

Thanks again Steve, your pricing on the 4L80E was much better than anyone else I found. I'm using the new Big Stuff 3 EFI and it has a trans controller built in. That and the new Paddle shifter from Twist Machine should make this car a blast to drive.
