I have a 69 camaro that was originally a 4 speed car. I ran a automatic in it for a few years and now I am ready to put the 4 speed in. I have never messed with a car 4 speed before, so I need some guidance.

The car has the clutch pedal and the clutch linkage is in the barn. I have a muncie that I was told was a M20 but I am not positive of that. I remember reading somewhere a few years back that there were some variations either between the trannys or the shifters as far as what would fit in a camaro. Anybody have any insight on that?

I still plan to run the crap out of it, so what kind of shifter would be a good one? I see a lot of hurst competition plus shifters on ebay.

As for clutches, at what performance level do you need to get a better than stock clutch? I plan on running a 11" clutch if that is OK.

Is there any differences between 4 speed bellhousings through the years--anything to look out for, because I need one?

Thanks for any help

The tranny needs to be a 69 style configuration if you want a clean instalation that will fit the floorpan and console. You need to check the casting numbers on the tail housing, side cover as well as verify the stud/nut mounted shift levers on the tranny rather than a bolt on arrangement that was used earlier. If you want to run an 11" clutch, you need a "621" bellhousing, flywheel, clutch etc. You can also use a "383" housing so look for one of those as they are much cheaper.

I would not buy a used shifter on ebay when brand new Hurst shifters and linkage kits are available from Jegs. You will have all the pieces and IT WILL FIT. 69 Camaro is a unique shifter. Sure you can mess around with "close to correct" but once you have done that dance a few times, it gets old quick. Just one man's opinion.

Once you have the tranny configuration verified as correct for 69 you can pick up those parts and you will be ready to shift!
