I am replacing an open 28 spline carrier with a 31 spline track lock unit. I assume the 31 spline unit will have the 3.062" bearings (it hasn't arrived yet to confirm), and I didn't think to check until just now, but my 28 spline unit has 2.891" bearings. So the question is, is the 31 spline going to fit in the case that the 28 spline came out of? Do I need to have the case bored? New adjusters? New case? Thanks for any input!
David, I'm not sure how this jumped from transmission/differential to brakes and suspension, please feel free to move!!

Find a case to fit the carrier, there are a lot of them around, and they're pretty cheap.

The inside diameter of both bearings is the same, so all you need to do is change the bearings. Most of the 31 spline differentials that I have seen have had the 2 7/8 bearings on them. So to answer your question, no, you don't need to find another case.

BGH, that's refreshing news. I am still waiting on the carrier, but I wanted to get a jump on the case situation b/c the seller may still have his case.
I re-read my info and it appears that the small od bearings have two id's available. Supposedly, the 31 sp only uses the large id, but could have the small od or large od.
Clear as mud!!

Timken bearing #LM102949 and race #LM102910 should work for you.
