My son purchased a 1968 camaro with no engine or trans and we're having trouble identifing the rear axle. (We're sure it's not stock and might not be a Chevy) Listed below are the marking we are finding on it:
1. Front of dif casing has a large N on the casting near where the drive shaft hooks in.
2. The front of the axle tubes have no markings.
3. The rear of the axle tube, driver side has a UV stamped on it.
4. Passenger side axle tube has no markings
5. The dif cover has B17 stamped vertically in the cover
6. When looking at the dif from the rear it has the following markings in the castings: (I'll list them using a clock as a refrance so you'll know the location)
A. (at 4:00 o'clock) \332\
B. (at 4:30) 8788647
C. (at 8:00) CFD with a tear drop under the "C" and a wheel shape under the "D"
7. The top of the dif casting has 2 large ring shaped loops set at an angle and is part of the casting. The look like they may have been used to attach the dif to the car in some way.
8. Both axle tube have brackets on the bottom, no idea what they are used for.

Does anyone have any idea what this is?
Thanks

Does the center section come out from the front? With the "N", I'm thinking of a Ford 9" rear with a nodular center section.

Sounds like you have a Chevelle rear end. The eyes on top are for the upper controll arms for the Chevelle or other coil spring GM car. You didn't say how many bolts were in the cover. How is the rear end attached to the leaf springs now?

You may have one of the Firebird rear ends in your car. Does it have 10 bolts in the cover? The Firebird used the 8.2 BOP 10 bolt. This is a little different from the Chevy 8.2 10 bolt. The BOP rear end has a 27 spline pinion instead of the 25 spline pinion used in the Chevy rear end. The BOP rear end also has no c clips. They used the same center casting for the Firebird as they did for the coil spring cars, so the eyes are cast into the top, but are not used.
