The ends of the crossmember out of my 68 have about a 1/8" gap between the two layers of metal. Is this the way they are suppose to be or should I use a tack weld and put them back together?

Thanks!

Don, don't worry about it. That's the way they are. I've always looked at it as an extra lockwasher. Nail it!

Donald,

I've been successful spot welding my crossmembers after bead blasting them, for the same reason you mention. Takes a lot of heat though because the stampings are so thick. However if the seperation is limited to the last few inches at each end I would not worry about it. It will draw up tight as you bolt it into the subframe.
