I'm looking in junkyards for a posi & good 3.23, or 3.42 gear set for my Camaro. biggearhead earlier told me I had a 10-Bolt 7.5" 26 Spline. That said, I'm looking for a posi carrier & some gears.

Is there a way while I'm in these junkyards of knowing what's what? Camaros had so many different options! Is there an easy way to tell if it is posi or what the gear ratio is without taking the cover off of everything? I hear of people going to the junkyard & buying a posi from an '87 Monte Carlo, etc. How? Any pointers?

Find the RPO tag. On a Camaro or Firebird it will be under the console lid. On a S10 it will be in the glove box. On the Monte Carlo it will probably be on the bottom of the trunk lid. The tag is a white decal with a bunch of 3 digit codes in alphabetical order. You will be interested in the codes that start with a G. The code G80 is for a limited slip or locking differential. The gear ratio will also be listed as a G code. GU5 is a 3.23, GU6 is a 3.42, GT4 is a 3.73 ... Remember that somewhere around '90 they went to 28 spline axles, so be carefull of what you get.

Hey Scott...

Im No "Big Gearhead" by far, but this is what I did. I took the chunk out an 86 Monte Carlo. Matched right up with the 84 Firebird I run now.

The Gear set was 3.42's in the Montecarlo. The SS Monte Carlo had 3.73's

Im just lettin you know this because it's another car option that you may want to look into when you go scrap hunting. I'm not sure of other rearends that will be compatable, but that's what I did!

Good luck in you finds...

Thank you.

How much, on average, should it cost to have a posi rebuilt? I found one that slips at 30 ft.lbs "so the clutches will need to be rebuilt" I'm told.

Take a look at these pictures and see which one you have. Some can't be rebuilt, others cost more to rebuild than they are worth. Some can be rebuilt without much trouble.
