: What clutch to run with a 468" BBC and M20

Looking for a clutch and pressure plate suggestion to run with a 10 spline M20 and 468" BBC. Engine should make close to 500 HP. The current stock style clutch smokes when the tires grab hard.

A stiffer than usual clutch pedal is OK, but not too stiff. The car will be driven on the street with occassional trips to the track.

Eric,

Im sure most are going to recommend the Center Force Dual Friction and with your power requirement it will probably work well. I personally was not to pleased with it. I smoked it in 6 runs although my 540 was making 600 ftlbs and the car was not hooking. Interestingly enough after carefull inspection it was the organic side that really looked burnt. I have since increased the power output of the 540 and switched to a clutchmasters stage 3 and its great the thing grabs real nice no chatter, segmented kevlar on both sides and no problem on the street. Give them a look, they have 5 different stages. And hopefully your working with an 11 or 12 inch, always nice to have more surface area. Mcleod makes some nice street clutches as well(dual friction)unless of coarse you want to get into a street twin disk, I might be heading in that direction myself. Good luck with your choice.

I have no experience with the newer style clutches but I used one of Mcleods 11in long style with basiclly the same combo. It was the only clutch that would live for any amount of time and being a long style the peddle pressure at idle was not too bad.

Thanks guys. The old clutch is 11" in diameter. We are using a Lakewood bellhousing.

Where do you get the Mcleods at Oger? I don't see them in Summit or Jegs -- only Centerforce, Zoom, Ram and Hayes.

Rich, In Jegs they list 2 different 11" 10 spline clutches with 1-1/8" dia shaft. One is listed for a truck and one is listed for everything else. I don't think we have a truck transmission, but who knows?

I bought it direct a long time ago.

I love the McLeod dual friction (Kevlar/organic) disc and their Weber pressure plate. My dad has had good luck with his Centerforce DF behind a mild 350 but I have heard of pressure plate warping under higher torque loads. Now I run McLeod's Rev-Lok 10.5" sintered iron clutch--works great, never slips, but it's a tempermental on-off deal when you're driving on the street. I bought direct from McLeod--ask for Red and he'll discuss the various options they offer.

hey eric68 - I'm runnning a RAM 11" diaphram pressure plate - reworked by a local shop to 3200lbs, and a RAM 11" 6 point metallic clutch disc. No slip behind my 468 even when ya slip it it just bites hard. Mine is a 26 spline unit for the Super T-10 - but they make a 10 spline for the Muncie... it's about 184.00 from Summit Racing. It's been in for 5 years with no problems - graemlins/thumbsup.gif
