View Full Version : Here's a New One!
idoxlr8 Feb 23rd, 05, 10:22 AM Before I left on Detachment afew weeks ago I had a small stain of oil on the driver's side carpet rubber mat. I cleaned it up and last night when I got home after driving for 45 minutes it reappears. It is not coming from the master cylinder.
I found the location where the fluid is coming from but the question is WHY? And how do I fix it?
It is coming from the back of the Speedo from the cable, and it IS Trans fluid.
dschribs Feb 23rd, 05, 10:36 AM I've heard of that. The fluid creeps up the cable and comes out where the connections is at the back of the speedo. I beleive it's from lack of lubricant on the cable but my memory is failing...I know someone else will chime in and give you a hand. If not, I'll try and find out where I read what the fix is..
HwyStarJoe Feb 23rd, 05, 10:42 AM Click had the exact same problem last year and fixed it. I can't remember his remedy. Do a search for the thread or wait for him to see this.
BPOS Feb 23rd, 05, 11:28 AM here is the thread:

click Feb 23rd, 05, 02:08 PM Yep its tranny fluid and on bare legs in summer, its kinda warm too. The link shows the process and its a simple fix, no fluid loss either. A good tranny shop has all the parts or O rings you need. Good luck.

idoxlr8 Feb 23rd, 05, 03:43 PM Thanks for the link, I tried a search but must have not used the correct Verbage.
That'll be the problem and the fix. Now I just have to find a good shop around here.
Click, How much was the whole assembly?
JohnZ Feb 23rd, 05, 04:14 PM The link didn't work for me, but the second-design Muncie speedo driven gear sleeve incorporated an internal lip seal as part of the sleeve assembly, just for that reason; the first-design sleeves didn't have any kind of internal seal at all - just the O-ring on the outside diameter. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
click Feb 23rd, 05, 04:42 PM I honestly dont recall the price since I was on the road to Seattle, 2500 mile one way trip and had to stop in Fargo for a GM dealer to repair it. Seems it was around $125 or close to that including labor and parts. Call around and ask for prices at tranny shops. Ask for the whole 'bullet' price and just O rings.
idoxlr8 Feb 24th, 05, 07:05 AM Just for those interested, I went to three local Trans shops and two of them did not have any and said dealer only, Third shop was completly "CLUELESS" even after I showed them the part on their bench, guy said they only come with the car and to go to a salvage yard. graemlins/clonk.gif graemlins/sad.gif
So I went to the Dealer down the street from my house.
The Part Number from Chevrolet is: 345215 Listed as a fitting but they call it the Speedo gear housing. Cost: $19.00 with the NEW style seal on the inner diameter and included the outer "O" ring. ;)
Go69 Feb 24th, 05, 01:54 PM For future reference if anyone needs one, please feel free to contact me as I work for a transmission shop and "should" be able to get these for you. I order them quite frequently when they begin leaking on customer cars. It is cheaper and faster to just replace them as opposed to attempting to re-seal them. I have come across a few applications that I could not locate them for, but for the most part they are available and usually pretty cheap.
Brian Lewis Feb 24th, 05, 08:06 PM My local trans shop sells the TH350 Bullets for $10 new, my understanding is they are not made by GM anymore but made aftermarket. Replaced mine and it solved the leak from the cable.
BowTieOverdrives also sells them.
