Mechanic at our local shop says I can mount a 200-4R on my muncie cross member in my 69 by just moving the cross member back on the subframe and drilling new holes. Can anyone confirm this?

No, I dont think that is right for a Camaro. I just put a 200r4 in my 68 last weekend, and I cant see any way the stock crossmember would have worked. I was replacing a turbo 350, but the Muncie, turbo 350 and powerglide all use the same crossmember.

Slide under your car and look, the crossmember fits into a indention in the floorpan and does not have enough room between the frame and floorpan to slide back, and the frame is shaped different farther back. And the the crossmember would not clear the 200s oil pan anyway.

I did read an article when I was researching the swap. They were installing a 200r4 into a Chevelle. If I remember correctly they moved back the crossmember on that car, but they may have been using a 400 crossmember. The 400 crossmember can be used in the Camaro by cutting off the mounting perch and rewelding it onto the other side.

I just bought a conversion crossmember from Bowtie Overdrives for mine. It bolted right in and only cost 150.00 and came with a new trans rear mount also.

You cant use a stock Muncie crossmember....it wont clear the trans pan.A 400 crossmember is needed. Also a 200-4r transmount sits about 6.5 inches further back than a Muncie, thats a long way to shove a crossmember back.

Note:Sometimes a spacer of about 3/8 thick is needed between the trans and the transmount for pan clearance.

Just did this on my 69. I used a TH400 Xmember and it fit just fine. I did need about 3/8 spacer to clear the trans mount. It is easier if you put a couple of washers between the trans mount and the trans to take up the 3/8 inch. I got the TH400 xmember from a catalog.

I also just did this swap in a '69. Used a T400 crossmember with a small block. I had to cut the mount pad off the crossmember and re-weld it about an inch to the driver's side. Should work as-is with a big block that uses big block frame mounts. I can't picture the 4-speed crossmember working with the 200. I think it CAN be done with a 700 - but not positive.
