I have just installed a 9" 100 miles ago in my 68 and i am very dissapointed.I bought a used (rebuilt)Trac-loc,set up kit w/new bearings, new ring and pinion new moser 31 spline axles, disc brake set up, paid to have it set up i have over 2,000.00 dollars in it.When you are off the gas pedal (either slowing down or coasting)it has a bad whine to it and when you turn corners with it it scrubs due to the trac-loc i guess.I have it out now and the Royal Purple fluid is no longer Purple in color it is brown with a build up of fine metal particles in the bottom of the housing.

I'm sorry for your problem, but if I was going to put $2000 in a 9" rearend, I would have Currie make one for me as well as have them set up the pumpkin!!

Bttt, you'd better pull her down before it gets worse so you can salvage what's still good??

Hopefully Big Gear Head will chime in here b/c he knows his stuff on rearends..

The Trac-loc is a little difficult to set up properly. It is very sensitive to shimming. If you don't get the shims just right it pops and makes noises. What you see in the bottom may be clutch material, or it could be metal from the gears. Do the gears look like they have a lot of wear on them?

I only have about 100 miles on it so maybe i caught it before it wore too much i had a shop look at the wear pattern on the R&P today and he said it looked like the pinion was too shallow due to overshimming at the bolts (round part that holds the pinion secure)would this cause my whine? Also what is the best way to strain the diffrental fluid to remove filings since i give $7 a quart for it (Royal Purple)

Incorrect pinion depth is the main cause of gear noise with new gears. If the pinion depth can be corrected then the noise may go away. You might try running the oil through a paint strainer with a magnet in it.
