: do i need to grease the axle bearings?
cavemanmoron Apr 14th, 03, 08:40 AM well i am about to put my 9 inch rear together to put in my '67.
It has moser axles,with what looks like new bearings,seals etc. }{they look nice}\
do i need to pack the bearings,or spray some lube on them,before assembly? If so what should i use?
Also how about the bearings on the carrier,that i can still see and get at before i bolt the pumpkin in.
I bought a 3.50 posi from an 80's full size Bronco.The gears look great,{the posi unit has 4 little roll pins,what do they do/?}
Glad the weather is improving finally,here! about 60 f here today,and about 75 tommorow!
big gear head Apr 14th, 03, 04:51 PM You don't need to grease the axle bearings. They are sealed and pre greased. The differential bearings could use a little gear oil. There should be 3 roll pins that hold the pinion shafts in place in the differential. Check the cover of the differential where the ring gear bolts go in. Look VERY closely for cracks in this cover. The Ford Traction Lock is very bad about cracking and breaking. When this happens everything in the rear end gets trashed.

These Moser axles,do look nice tho,
thanks for the hint,about checking for cracks;i cleaned up the whole pumpkin,and everything looks fine,
big gear head Apr 15th, 03, 12:51 PM Sorry about that, I assumed that since they were Moser axles that the bearings would be the sealed type. If they are tapered rollers then the seal will be on the outside of the axle bearing instead of the inside. They will get oil from the differential. Look inside the housing end and be sure there is no seal in there. If there is a seal you need to remove it so the bearings will get oil.

I see no seal,but wondered,for initial startup/useage,is there any need to put on white lube,or a light coating of wheel bearing grease etc? graemlins/clonk.gif
I am more used to engines,and have always used some type of assembly lube,{Stp sometimes,lol}cam breakin lube etc,and wanted to be careful.
I ordered from Summit a floor jack adaptor for the pumpkin assembly,i figured the $56 is cheaper than a sore back,arms,etc, LOL
Thanks,Lee {cavemanmoron} graemlins/beers.gif
big gear head Apr 15th, 03, 04:30 PM Just put some gear oil on them before you slide them in. There is no need for heavy grease, just some 80W90 gear oil. Don't forget the oil additive, Ford number M-19546.
