View Full Version : is a rs or ss really worth it with out all #'s matching
tinner98 Feb 15th, 04, 06:13 AM I have been watching cars go on ebay for some time now and am suprised at what some of these cars will go for . I watched a 69 Z-28 go for 14,000 with out the original motor needing complete resto too. To me, with out the original drive train its just another camaro. Am I wrong with this train of thought?
Steve
click Feb 15th, 04, 06:30 AM Steve welcome to Team Camaro and you are right on the money in your thinking. Prices are nuts. Ive seen it over the last 3 years on ebay as well.
Today clones are going for what true Z and RS and SS cars used to sell for. Its supply and demand. The correct number matching buyer must be willing to pay higher and higher prices for that correctness.
Other buyers that want a sharp looking camaro and dont care about crate engines and right color paint to match the original factory color, are happy to just drive around in a gorgeous car. Bless them too since both these type of buyers push the value of our own cars up.
It is harder for someone to buy an 'entry level' number matching car that needs resto for under $15000 now. You will then add another $15000 to it for paint and engine rebuild and interior etc etc etc.
Thats my 2cents for now. Im sure others will chime in.
By the way, I saw an Endura bumper lift piece for sale for $500.00 The RS headlight washer solenoids are going for $400 etc. as go the cars, so go the parts too.

Flatt67 Feb 15th, 04, 10:17 AM I agree, too. I always laugh when i see an add claiming all matching numbers (except the engine)!! It seems like COPO's or very high option RS/Z cars hold their values OK even when the original motor is gone, but unless its something super rare, NOM kills it.
z28man Feb 15th, 04, 02:15 PM I also watch the market change , and I agree that a matching number car should be the higher price car , but it is changing , I remember in the early 1980's when you could not give a six cylinder camaro away !!! same for chevelle's with the malibu thing , if it was not a RS/SS or SS396 or a Z/28 it would not sell for much ,,,,, but the time's they are a changing ,,, now most people are more concerned with a good solid rust free body , you can get a good price for 12337 car if it is rust free , , I think this trend will continue , like said above a lot of people just want the 67 68 69 camaro line's (LOOK) and don't care what the number's say ,,,
it is amazing what the price's are doing , I better never sell my 67 rs I only have like $4 grand in it I could not see myself paying the big price for one even though I love them ,, I just could not do it ,,,,
DjD Feb 15th, 04, 02:43 PM Prices are up and I doubt they will drop. IMO a Z is a Z and an SS is an SS with or without the orig engine. Pricing should reflect it though and NOM should bring a bit less. $15K for a car that will cost $15K to restore and will sell for $25K sounds upside down but it's the price you pay to play for a couple years... Buy a Bass boat and fishing gear and come back in 2 years after selling it and let us know how you did!! ;)

GlennC Feb 15th, 04, 03:29 PM Since were on the topic of price and matching numbers.
I'm getting ready to sell my '69 that I've owned for 17yrs now. I'm the second owner and the car is numbers matching. But it is plain jane 350 2bl,dual exhaust, saginaw 4sp, 10 bolt posi with A/C and endra bumper. Burgundy with black standard interior. It now has an edelbrock intake and carb, headers with 2 1/2" flowmasters. I've removed the front sub frame and blasted and painted everything, new SSBC front disc rear drum power brakes. New KYB shocks, '88 monte quick ratio power steering, new carpet, cowl hood. Floors are solid (no rust). The car needs some body work and paint. Where the trunk meets the rear inner wheel well there is rust through (perfect canidate for mini tub/pro touring). I have all of the original stuff that goes with the car ie. AM radio, 8 track, intake and carb, 14" ralleys with tires, flat hood ect...
What do you guys think it would sell for?

What do you guys think it would sell for? Without knowing what the market is like in your area or seeing the car who knows? You are the one that has the best knowledge and knows what you've put into it. Put a price on it and list it in our ads area, www.camaros.net/classifieds (http://www.camaros.net/classifieds)
Set the price a bit higher than you feel it's worth and be ready to lower it if the folks that contact you leaving you feeling like you over priced it.

Put a price on it and list it in our ads area, Dennis, I'll probable do that. I quess I was wandering how much numbers matching affects a plain jane car like mine. It might add a little value, but come on lets face it no one is going to spend the money to factory restore a plan jane.
DjD Feb 15th, 04, 05:03 PM That's not true, if I could afford another car I'd love to have a 327/2bbl all stock. I missed my chance a year or so ago for around $7K, the only thing not stock and orig on it was the carpet. Ever since driving my friends car a couple years ago I've had a soft spot... The problem is the guy that can only have one toy is gonna want to hotrod it...
Remember the older things get the less like it survive. Break out a correct drivetrain number matching inline 6 1st gen ragtop in 10 years or so and see what it's worth. We tend to be gearheads first before collectors, there are lots of folks into camaros that don't suffer from Tool Time Testostrone...
GlennC Feb 15th, 04, 05:24 PM Break out a correct drivetrain number matching inline 6 1st gen ragtop in 10 years or so and see what it's worth. Dennis I understand what your saying. But you did throw the "r" word in there. I would love to find a inline 6 1st gen ragtop as original as mine.
My first car almost was a '67 inline 6 ragtop camaro. If only the old lady could have found that title and/or my dad wasn't so against buying a car without a title....Oh what fun to cruise with the top down...
