I've done a lot of narrowed rear ends and custom rear ends, but I need to know if the springs need to be relocated to mini tub a '69 Camaro. A few years ago I told you all about my friend Wayne Daniel who was killed 3 days before we were suppose to start building the 468 for his '69 SS Camaro. Well some friends and I went ahead and built the engine and then we all got busy on other things. I am now trying to get some more work done on the car and the rear end is the next thing on my list. The rest of the car is at another guy's shop and he doesn't have time to work on it right now. My problem is that Wayne wanted to put as large of a tire under the car that he could without having to move the frame rails. The tubs have already been started, but not finished. I had to narrow the rear end 4 inches to fit the wheel/tire combo, but now I need to know where to put the spring perches. There is no way that I can get to the car to test fit the springs, so I was hoping that someone else had done this and could tell me if the springs have to be moved.

I know with the standard 3" mini-tub you have to move the rear of the springs because they'll be in the tire otherwise; the front is okay. DSE makes offset shackles for the rear to do that. Of course that also means the spring pads are moved in.

I test fitted my bro in laws 315/35/17's on my 69 Camaro. The wheels had 5.75" bs. Beleive it or not it fit under the wheel lips(rolled) but was just about touching the wheel house. It had plenty of clearence from the leaf springs. If you were to do a 1.5" mini tub you can clear 17x11's on 315's with 5.75 to 6" bs. Then you can leave your springs in the stock position.

I think this car is getting the tubs moved 3 inches. I'm not sure, but I think that is how far it is to the frame rails. I wasn't in on that part of it. I was just suppose to build the engine and rear end.

Freddie,

Here's a shot of the passenger side wheelwell and frame rail on a '69. Sorry the pic is so big and also might not give you a clear idea.
But you're correct... it's only about 3" to the frame, IF that. It may be less at the center of tire-to-frame distance.
